Modern Warfare 3

I’m also getting my butt kicked pretty regularly compared to BLOPS. My TDM K:D in Black Ops is around 2.25 and in MW3 it’s 1.80-ish.

However, I think a big part of that is the fact that the Christmas kids haven’t arrived yet. In a few weeks there’ll be a flood of new players who get the game as a holiday gift and who aren’t as skilled as the current crop. I’m hoping the difficulty curve will get a bit easier at that point.

I’m still playing quite a bit, and have decided this game is designed for a little less movement. While BLOPS rewarded running around with an SMG, I have a lot more success in MW3 moving slowly around with an assault rifle. Right now I’m mostly using the CM901 with underbarrel shotgun. Once that’s patched in a couple of weeks, I’ll probably switch to the ACR.

Agreed, I get my ass handed to me when I’m trying to sprint around the map. When I slow down, keep my guard up, and watch out for the enemy as I’m moving around, I’m far more successful.

There’s your problem. The underbarrel shotgun is bad. You’re better off running the Striker with the range attachment. The Type 95 with rapid fire is stupid good, as is the MK14 with red dot.

If youre wedded to the CM901, run extended mags or the grenade launcher attachment.

There’s currently a glitch where if you put either the noob tube or underbarrel shotgun on the CM901, it gives the gun rapid fire. The CM901 has the highest damage per bullet, but lowest fire rate of all the full-auto assault rifles. So putting rapid fire on it makes it incredibly powerful. I don’t want noob tubes littering the battlefield, so I don’t equip that. I never use the shotgun attachment.

I alluded to this earlier, but the glitch is slated to be fixed in the 1.07 patch in a week or two. At which point I’ll probably use the ACR as my go-to assault rifle when I want full auto.

I agree with you about the MK 14, except that I find the iron sights to be fine, and prefer rapid fire, which removes the fire cap entirely. Add the kick proficiency, and the thing has zero recoil, which is pretty neat.

I dig the CM901. It’s my most used assault rifle, I think. The rate of fire thing kills it in close situations, though.

I didn’t know that about the glitch, though. That’s pretty funny.

I find that I’m still enjoying MW3. I play Kill Confirmed almost exclusively since it discourages camping the most. There are still some spots in some maps that will get camped. like the central building in Resistance, but you can just avoid them. I’ve been trying out all sorts of guns and my favorite so far is the striker, but the one I do best with is the P90 with a silencer. My KD has dropped .2 points from Black Ops but I was never very good so I don’t mind (1.4 vs 1.2). My KD is getting better though, and I’ve only pt in about 20% of the time into MW3 that I put into Black Ops.

I do have a couple of issue with the game:

 • Fix the Last Stand Kill/Assist thing. If I shoot a guy 5 times and put him in Last Stand and somebody else gets one bullet in him at the last second, the kill should be min, not his.
 • Connection/Lag Compensation. Yesterday I stabbed a guy I put on Last Stand (I mean the whole animation of me stabbing him played, I heard a thunk and all) and yet after about half a second he stabbed me and I died. Or more often I’ll be rounding a corner and get shot as soon as I see a guy out in the open, while the kill cam will show that he had much longer to aim and fire on me.

ETA: I did see my first boosters yesterday. I joined a game as somebody was getting their second (or third possibly) MOAB, then the score showed the guy had 110+ kills which makes no sense sine 65 confirms ends the game so I got suspicious. Next match I spot 2 guys, one from my team, one from the opposite team, crouched next to each other. The guy from the other team would place a tactical insertion at his feet then the guy from my team would kill him, rinse repeat. Thus the guy from my team racked up kills, and the guy from the other team racked up Denies. They finished with the 2 tos scores in the match by 1000 points or more, yet contributed not a thing to the teams.

I used to see that all the time in MW2, quite annoying. Whenever possible, I would camp them until they chose another place and then I’d find them there and camp them, etc. I have yet to run into this on MW3 yet and I hope not to.

I’m still playing pretty regularly. Anyone else?

Some changes I’ve noticed recently:[ul]
[li] They fixed the rapid fire glitch on the CM901. I’ve since switched to the ACR.[/li][li] They nerfed the akimbo FMGs. Thank god, it was getting to the point where you absolutely had to be using them to be at all competitive. Though they didn’t nerf them enough in my opinion; they’ll still outgun an SMG at close range. [/li][li] They fixed one of my pet peeves with “Kill Confirmed.” It used to be that someone would hole up in a corner, get a kill, and then stay scoped in on that dog tag until someone came to deny it. Sometimes they’d wait for half the freaking game. The camper would get that kill right after the victim got the “deny.” I guess they’d just be going for killstreaks. So while the game seemed to have been designed to cut down on camping, it actually made it worse. However, they seem to have changed it so that the tags disappear a lot sooner. So no more camping on dog tags. [/li][li] They’ve tweaked the connections to the point where they’re fine about 90% of the time. I still strongly dislike the lag comp system though: I’ve got a great connection because I pay for one and because I’m lucky to live on top of a node. So I host a lot. Which means I have the best connection in a given lobby. Which means that I have the most “lag” artificially added on by the game. So I still get the occasional killcam where I put a sniper bullet in the middle of the guy’s center of mass, and then he kills me and the killcam shows I never got a shot off. [/li][/ul]
I prestiged once and have been sitting at level 80 for a while. I have no intention of prestiging again: I already have eight custom classes and don’t feel like I need the extra emblems. A friend of mine is doing the prestige grind, and had a great strategy: he used one of his first prestige tokens to unlock the Stinger permanently. So he always carries one and always shoots down everything the enemy puts up, which gets him lots of XP, and thus helps him level up a lot faster.

At this point, my favorite weapon is the MP7 with rapid fire and silencer. It’s got less recoil than most ARs, higher rate of fire than most SMGs, almost the same range as a typical AR, and almost as big a magazine as an LMG, all with the increased movement speed and tight hipfire typical of SMGs. Great gun; I’m surprised I don’t see more of them on the battlefield. I guess a big part of it is that everyone is still doing the prestige grind, and the MP7 is a pretty high unlock.

PacifistPorcupine - I agree with you about the last stand/assist issue. BLOPS had it right: the guy who put him in last stand should be credited with the kill.

I’m still playing, but less than I was. And I’m still getting creamed, whereas when I switch to Black Ops I consistently put up K/Ds over 1. The game is just not as good for me, and I still can’t figure out why.

On the other hand, I’ve completed 47 of 50 achievements, and the rest I’ll get just grinding it out on Survival. I have to buy one of everything from the Armory and finish all the maps with 15 rounds or better and I’ll have the game completed.

I am still playing regularly. I haven’t noticed what you say about the tags vanishing. As far as I know, the tag vanishes when the person gets killed again or disconnects, and I haven’t noticed that changing. The only recent change I’ve noticed is the influx of new players that got the game on Christmas, so maybe they get killed faster?

I prestiged 5 times and then stopped. I am a stubborn idiot, but I do have a limit. I got 13 different weapons ( 1 shotgun, 7 ARs and 5 SMGs) to 1000 kills then picked the 10 with the highest KDR, and made my classes. Yesterday I decided to learn sniping, so I dumped one of my weapons (the ACR) for a Barrett and I’m working on the ghillie in the mist challenge. I’m up to 108 of 200. I actually have a positive KDR with it which surprised me, but it’s fun so I’ll keep it for variety.

Still playing, not every night, but most. I’m really enjoying the Drop Zone mode. It’s made me almost totally switch away from HQ, except that you can’t get killstreak rewards during Drop Zone matches.

I guess I could be wrong about the tags vanishing. It’s just that the last few days, whenever that game mode came up, I’ve been noticing dogtags vanishing a lot quicker than ever before. You may be right that it’s just confirmation bias or something.

In general, I haven’t seen the influx of crappy Christmas kids I was hoping to see. I have seen a few more newbies, but I’ve also seen a lot more really good players too. I think the mean skill level has stayed about the same.

Wow. That’s a lot of kills. According to COD:Elite, I’ve only got six guns above 1000 kills (4 ARs, 1 SMG, & 1 sniper), and I consider my play time to be on the heavy side.

As I mentioned upthread, I do like sniping in this game. I generally use the AS50, but for when I want to fail at quickscoping, I’m also leveling up the MSR. Out of curiosity, why’d you choose the Barrett? The AS50 is essentially the same gun with a smaller magazine and less recoil.

I haven’t tried drop zone outside of private matches. It seems like it would be awfully hectic and grenade-spammy. Is that your experience?

I’m still playing most nights on the 360. One of my favorite aspects of the game as of the most recent patch is that they changed all Hardcore modes to Hardcore Ricochet - no more getting killed by idiot teammates! Their grenade spam and careless shooting now really only affects them. There are small issues like when you’re shooting at someone and a teammate runs into your line of fire so you die, but that’s still far better than the way it was before.

For some reason, I improved pretty significantly around early December and have done pretty well since. With the exception of a couple of days last week when I couldn’t buy a kill, I’ve been at or near the top of my team. My favorite weapons have been the ACR and the FAD.

Life? What is a life? I know no such thing. Total game time is somewhere between 7 and 8 days.

I had no reason for picking it. I am completely new to sniper rifles and I did not feel like trying them all out, so I got whatever looked nice. No sure how much sniping I’ll do.

It really depends on the map. It is a very hectic game mode, which I enjoy for a change. Nice to get in 2-3 games in quick succession with a lot of action. Longest I’ve had any match last is about 7 minutes.

FYI, there are three types of sniper rifles in this game, with two guns in each type.

[ul][li]Big semi-autos. These two will give you one-hit kills if you hit trunk or head. And you can fire quick followup shots if you miss your first one. The drawback is that they give you a movement penalty: you run at about the same speed as you would with an LMG.
[]Barret .50 - Has greater recoil. Without kick, the recoil will make you lose sight of most targets. []AS50 - Less recoil than the Barrett, but has a much smaller magazine.[/ul][]Bolt actions. These two will also give you one-hit kills to the trunk or head, but you need to pause between shots to work the bolt. No movement penalty here - you run at the same speed as with an assault rifle. If you ever want to try quickscoping, these are the ones to use (with Speed proficiency)[ul][]L118A - There’s no reason to use this unless you haven’t unlocked the MSR. []MSR - Exactly the same as the L118 except you can work the bolt slightly faster.[/ul] []Little semi-autos. These two will not give you one-hit kills to the trunk and head. Only to the head. So they’re generally most useful in hardcore, or in core modes with a silencer and an understanding that you’ll need two hits to kill. They both have almost no recoil though, so a second shot isn’t that big a problem.[ul][]Dragunov - I’m not sure why anyone would use this. I think you might start with more ammo? []RSASS - I think it’s got slightly lower recoil than the dragunov. It has a gigantic magazine. [/ul]
[/li]There are other slight differences as well, but they don’t really alter the mechanics of the guns that much. The amount of magnification on the default scope differs a bit with each one. The aim-down-sight time might also vary.

As I mentioned above, the AS50 is my favorite because my sniping style does not run up against its two drawbacks. The slow movement speed I don’t mind because I’m moving slowly from position to position anyway when I’m sniping. And the small magazine I don’t mind because I’m reloading after almost each shot anyway.

Personally, I’m not a big fan of the sniper selection in this game. There are basically three choices in MW3 whereas MW2 had four. And the one that’s missing is my favorite. MW2 had the big semi-auto (the Barrett), the bolt action (the Intervention), and the little semi-auto (the M21 EBR), but it also had a medium semi-auto (the WA2000). I wish they’d given us a medium semi-auto in MW3, but c’est la vie.

Oh cool, thanks. I thought the choice was semi auto vs bolt, didn’t know the distinction between big and little. My sniping style, if you can call it that, is to run around with my secondary (usually akimbo skorpions) until I decide to stop and scope in on a spot for a few seconds. That usually happens when I figure the other team should be coming my way based on spawns, I hear somebody (SitRep Pro FTW), when somebody pops up on the map, or when I bump into somebody from behind (happens quite a lot). I’ve managed to kill 2 or 3 people no-scoping, more in desperate attempts at survival than conscious choice. I’ve not managed to quick scope the broad side of a barn yet, much less a moving target.

If I stay with COD for long before switching over to Skyrim, I’ll probably try the AS50, the MSR, and a silenced RSASS just to see how that goes. Almost seems like a pity to have wasted so many games on leveling up the Barrett

I tried the AS50. I currently have it with Kick and Extended Mags, level 18 or so. I do better with it that with the Barrett (1.6 vs 1.2 K/D) so thanks for the advice! Still, I can’t shake the feeling that I’m a camping little bitch when I use a sniper.

The RSASS, in addition to it sounding exceptionally mean, is a pretty solid sniper rifle in the game. It’s got virtually no recoil.

I just discovered that you can upload clips from the PS3 to YouTube if they’re under 30 seconds!

To try it out, I made a little clip of a game from last night and uploaded it. And hot damn! It works!

(I’m “Zesty_Justice” and this is me getting quad feed with a Striker. A little sloppy but I got the job done.)

To upload a clip, you have to have your youtube account linked first. Then go to theater and make a clip under 30 seconds. Put it in your “vault.” Then go to your vault and select the clip. Instead of selecting “play,” select “render.” It’ll think for a couple of minutes, and then bam, your clip will be on Youtube.

Everybody share some clips!
