I had a great time with BL1 and BL2, was less enthused with the Pre-Sequel, but still played it quite a bit. Would love to hear some thoughts on the new one before I plonk down the requisite $60.
Thanks!

I’m currently downloading it…
I played it last night (pre-ordered for Xbox One). I really like the added flexibility of the talent trees. I’m playing FL4K (the robot guy with a pet) and I love how I can pick an Action Skill out of three (rather than each character just having one) and also being able to pick a unique, eventually upgradeable pet out of three. Also, weapons now have more distinction based on manufacturer.
Appearance customization is better too. You now get to pick which colors to assign to your gear, rather than collecting color schemes. Weapons can have “charms” dangling from them, your ECHO device can have different appearances, and there are other new ways to customize that I can’t remember or haven’t gotten to yet.
I wish I’d had more time to play but I had to cut it short because I had to get some sleep before work, but I can’t wait to get back to play tonight. I’m glad I have an extra day off next week. This is looking like my favorite entry in the series.
I got to play it more and FL4K’s pets got on my nerves. After a while I spent as much time worrying about keeping the pet alive than killing enemies and it got to be too much. I was using the spiderant which is supposed to be the toughest one.
I switched to Zane and now I’m rocking. I love that I can queue up two different Action Skills, which means that at any given time one of them is probably available. I lose the ability to throw grenades (the second skill takes that place) but I consider that a benefit because I hate using grenades in general.
There are so many options in how you play this game that it’s a huge improvement.
Are the missions imaginative? Is the dialogue funny?
From the reviews I read earlier, yes and yes. Have yet to pay myself, though.
I played through the first three major zones Thursday night, and had a blast. Definitely at least as good a game as B2, and better than the pre-sequel. They’ve improved a bunch of things within the game and made other things not so good, but overall it’s an improved version of the game. Absolutely beautiful and amazingly detailed maps. Still trying to figure out how to equip and build my characters so they don’t run into a brick wall and die, but that’ll come with time.
What do you think about Claptrap? The difference is noticeable but not too bad.
I don’t like him nearly as much. He went from being obliviously cheerful and upbeat to being a total jerk. He still has some good lines but overall he’s not enjoyable.
Zane’s holo-clone (that you can swap places with at will) is my favorite ability from any Borderlands game yet.
In one fight I went up against a bruiser with a shield. I tossed my clone behind him, and as he charged me I swapped places then shot him in the ass. He angrily turned around, charged again, I swapped again and repeated. He didn’t last long. You can also go on a high place, drop a clone, jump down, engage enemies, then swap back and snipe them while they flail at your clone.
I’ve enjoyed it so far. I find it amusing that a lot of the reviews are “Borderlands 3 is just more Borderlands” like that’s a bad thing. I like playing a game with some humor, that has a good story that can be played in single-player mode, and that doesn’t have the microtransaction or loot box mechanics of a lot of newer games.
Hell, if it was dramatically different, I would lose all interest in it. I want zillions of guns and zillions of guys to shoot with them. If Borderlands 36 is more Borderlands, I’ll play it.
I went ahead and bought it yesterday afternoon and spent probably 5 hours so far playing the Gunner/Mech character. My initial impressions are as follows:
It really does continue the “Borderlands” flavor/style/humor. It’s not quite as funny as I remember BL2 being the first time through, but it’s early yet.
I don’t like this character as much as I like the soldier in the previous games. The Mech isn’t nearly as nice as having a turret to toss down. I’m still learning when/how to pop the mech, so maybe I’ll like it more as I get in to it.
Skill trees, so far, don’t much care for them. I’ve been picking passives, and it feels “slow” like I’m not adding anything but incremental damage/health/shield or whatever.
Missions are pretty far apart, not bad, but a fair amount of driving/teleportation to get to the next spot.
So far, I don’t like the “team” as much as I did the characters in BL2, but I’m not far enough in to make a final judgement on that, yet.
Overall, I’d say it is fun, maybe not as much as BL2 (at least, not yet), but better than the Prequel, which I felt like fell pretty flat.
I don’t think it needs to be “good” or “bad” but it’s useful. I played 1 & 2 and liked them enough to finish the story but not enough do “True Vault Hunter” or chase a bajillion guns, etc. So “It’s more Borderlands” tells me that I shouldn’t avoid playing it but I might as well wait until it’s on a hefty discount since it’s not a game I’m likely to sink a million hours into. On the other hand, there’s other franchises where “It’s more [Game]…” is a feature to me, just as it is to you here.
FWIW, Moze is closer to being a replacement for the gunzerker; Zane is closer to the soldier (and gets a hover turret, among other things). But yeah, the tank girl is a bit of a slog, due to absolutely no useful healing ever, so you have to have healing grenades & shields.
Zane’s holo-clone is something you can use like a turret as well; you place it and it sits there shooting the closest enemy. I use it to flank like I used to use turrets. It has other tricks too, of course, but that’s one use for it.
I’m really enjoying it. The dialogue isn’t quite as funny as B1, 2, and PS, in my opinion, and I wasn’t as emotionally invested in the major plot events (though I really should’ve been). I’m enjoying the switchable skill trees as well.
As a break from tradition, I’m playing the Siren while my wife plays the Soldier (usually it’s the other way around, but we’ve each played every character in the first two games). None of the characters grabbed me at first, but Amara’s definitely grown on me; I look forward to progressing with Zane, too. His dialogue is great!
I also really enjoy what they did with the guns, and that they have alternate effects (the taser, being able to switch between elements, and especially Atlas’ tracker bullets–yum!), but not too crazy about the ramp-up time on Maliwan elementals.
I love what they did with Tina–I did get misty-eyed with relief to learn that she’s still very much the Tina I know and love; I’d like to see more of Zero, Brick and Morty, though. And where the hell is Salvador?
I think “You couldn’t hit a cow’s arse with a banjo” might slip into my everyday usage at some point.
I’m still learning it but so far I enjoy it. I really like the humor so that helps. Only at level 10 so I’m playing kind of slow but I look forward to exploring. The side characters seem well written and voiced as well.
I just started but am already frustrated because whatshername told me to steal a car and I cannot see how to get to the area where I’m supposed to do that.
The map takes some getting used to–I can’t figure out how to get it to stay oriented like a normal map in every other game in existence. I’ll check the map, head off in a direction, check again, and the map’s rotated 90 degrees.
Rickjay, from Ellie, if I’m remembering correctly, if you face the entrance to her place, the exit to the car place is at about 2:00, then head clockwise around the huge pile of cars until you find an entrance.
