Mods, can't you tell Snowboarder Bo to shut up?
Actually (unfortunately) I had read all of that and considered it before writing what I wrote.
If that’s true, then I apologize for mistaking the fact that you didn’t understand the origin of the phrase or it’s substitute meaning as being because you didn’t read the thread(s). Clearly there were other reasons at play.
You clearly don’t understand what the words “in context” mean. Imagine Al Franken had a conversation with Rush Limbaugh where he decided to say “Yo, fathead” every time he really meant “Look that up on Wikipedia.” Using “Yo, fathead” to mean what Franken meant would not be using it in context.
Oh I understand what it means. It has to do with “the parts of a written or spoken statement that precede or follow a specific word or passage, usually influencing its meaning or effect” and “the set of circumstances or facts that surround a particular event or situation”. I’ve clearly shown that my use of “Let’s go to the quarry and throw stuff down there” fits those criteria.
Ann: You, know, Bob, it really is annoying when you fart in elevators like that.
Bob: It makes me giggle, Ann. Let’s see if I can squeeze out another one.

Yeah, that’s being intentionally obnoxious.
This is just more blather whereby you are trying to justify the attitude that a request must be honored, which makes your request, in actuality, a demand.

Try this one on, and tell me why you shouldn’t honor my “request”: The use of your nickname “Wombat” in every post offends me. Wombats once killed a puppy I had, and seeing your nickname reminds me of that and all the pain and emotional anguish I went through. Please stop using your nickname.

Now, if you don’t stop using your nickname, are you being a jerk? By continuing to use your nickname, you will be deliberately causing me offense, according to your own logic, right?
No. It does not have a specific meaning, unless you’re talking about real quarries. You are trying to give it a meaning, which is something completely different.
I didn’t give it this meaning. Some guy who works with Chessic Sense did. If you read the threads, how it that you don’t know this?
Perhaps when Frank was annoyed enough to start a Pit thread about how annoying it was, and you used the phrase repeatedly in responding to the thread, people got the impression you were doing it just to be a jerk.
In fact, in the Pit thread, I used “Let’s go to the quarry and throw stuff down there” a total of 6 times and several of those were expository in nature.

Besides, it’s the Pit, where we can be somewhat jerkish. I thought that was the whole point of the Pit:

[

](Revised Forum Rules for the BBQ Pit: read this before posting - The BBQ Pit - Straight Dope Message Board)

Throughout this whole thing, I haven’t insulted other posters, nor have I lied about things other posters have said, nor have I made up things and claimed other posters said them. I haven’t made bald statements of an intent to troll, nor have I deliberately stalked another poster and then derailed a thread over this. I’m not enjoying having to defend myself, but I will continue to do it if I have to; I see no reason to just meekly submit to bullying.

I find it baffling that this is the hill you decided to make a stand on.

Go on, fight the man and don’t let him be the boss of you. Over weaksauce.

You truly are the Son of God.

I still think it means Little Old Lady.

So I was wrong?

Well Fuckety-Ass FUCK Fucking Hell!

Actually, I kinda agree with you here, SB.

Given that, can I politely request that you stop using it, please?

I’m one of the ones who finds it a bit annoying as it disrupts the flow of the thread I’m reading (I have to stop and think ‘What the hell? Oh, that’s SB… what the hell does he mean by that again?’). LOL is well known enough that it doesn’t have that effect. I’d rather not place you on ignore: I’ve never yet in over 10 years of somewhat passive participation here used the ignore list, and I also normally enjoy your input.

Up to you of course!

Bonerific!

Your analogy fails because nobody said they were offended by your use of the phrase, only that they are annoyed by it.

I’m sort of enjoying keeping score on this kerfuffle.

As best I can tell, this is now the 13th longest thread in ATMB history, all 11,469 of 'em. Moving up to number 11 seems almost a foregone conclusion. Which would make this a one-in-a-thousand thread.

Getting from there to #7 is a bit of a jump, but not inconceivable. I don’t see this getting past #4 no matter what.

We shall see …
LOL with a Dr. Evil cackle.

I do not understand your leap of “logic” there. The aforementioned blather was simply an analogy that fairly accurately depicts what you’re doing.

For the sake of clarity, I am not making a demand. Heck, I’m not even making a request. And I’m certainly not speaking with a mod hat on (as I noted above). I’m just expressing my opinion of what you’re doing. I think Rhythmdvl said it well:

I’ve revised my original opinion, though, Bo. Although you are certainly annoying a lot of people with your out-of-context phrase, I don’t think that’s your primary reason for doing it, and I don’t think it’s trolling per se. It seems to me that you’ve simply decided to dig in your heels and defy peer pressure. It’s not so much “I’m not touching youuuuu” as “You are not the boss of me.” Seems silly to me, but have at it.

And by “have at it,” I mean I don’t really consider this issue worthy of the major debate it’s turned into. Neither of us is raising any new issues at this point in the discussion, and it’s unlikely that either of us will change our current point of view.

Please see Lord Ashtar’s post above this one. His response sums it up beautifully and I feel no need to elaborate.

I would say yes, “you aren’t the boss of me” is a fairly accurate, if succinct, description of my attitude towards the “requests” that have been posted. Thank you for seeing the distinction.

Okay, lemme see:

Hmmm. Lemme get my dictionary. Ah, here it is (boldings mine):

[

[

Yep, seems like they mean pretty much the same thing. Especially since one of the definitions of “offend” is “to annoy”.

But let me check my thesaurus.

[

](626 Synonyms & Antonyms for OFFEND | Thesaurus.com)

Yep, they’re synonyms alright.

I stand by what I wrote.

I fully accept Snowboarder Bo’s explanation of his intent. Problem is, his intent is inane, and he doesn’t realize it.

Certainly, moderator action is not required.

Certainly, I am free to put him on ignore. I’d prefer not to–I find many of his posts to be worth reading–but if I find that his recent obsession makes his posts not worth reading, then I will put him on ignore.

I’ve got to admit, I find his frequent comments about “just ignore me if you don’t like it” to be bewildering. I’d prefer that SDMB posters read my posts; I don’t write them for mental masturbation.

Words can have multiple meanings. As such equivocations happen. I think you are banking on that in order to strain a point here.

Personally I don’t think you were trolling. I think you were attempting to be witty and failed spectacularly. Now, you won’t let it drop out of principle.

I didn’t know that every time I was annoyed, I was also offended! Thank you for setting me straight.

In B minor with strings.

(I am considering making that my catchphrase.)

Well, thank you. You have manage to express my feelings very closely.

Except you let out that this as a small coterie arguing stridently to get those in a position of power to enforce their narrow opinions and beliefs on the rest of us, and we fail to stand our ground in peril of our freedoms.

I think I should cut back on the political news for a while …

Yeah, come on Bo-dacious. I like your guts just fine and think this thread is highly retarded, but you know damn well that “annoy” and “offend” don’t mean the same thing. Don’t try to dictionary.com your way into some sort of point.

+1

Best post in this thread, IMHO.
Hilarious.
And now, I have this mental image of… nm.

I apologize for trying to use facts to rebut another poster’s argument.

Oh please. The purpose of a thesaurus is to list similar or related words, but they are not always synonyms. From Wikipedia:

I don’t believe that anyone who is fluent in English could seriously think there is no significant different between annoy and offend.
