Mods splitting threads leaving someone as "OP"

Mild Pitting of Beck - The BBQ Pit - Straight Dope Message Board

This happens quite a lot. One particular mod does it far more than others but it’s not just him, several others do it too.

A mod in his opinion decides a thread should be split, then creates a thread title for it and leaves the new poster, who was just making a reply in another thread, as the unwitting OP of a new thread.

Threads get split far too much, but if a thread is split EVERY split thread should have at a minimum a new title reflecting the split

“A mild pitting of Beck, (split from What are you THINKING)”

and a further explanation in the body of the OP itself

Split thread by WhatExit

Over in CS, Beckdawreck…

with the green text actually the mod’s yellow text.

Yeah. I don’t like this crap either!
The title should be changed.
It’s not fair. It’s a split from a discussion about Walz/recipes posted. Not about ME.

I have to say this splitting stuff and naming whoever was the last poster as the Pitter isn’t right either.

I have never been criticized in all my years as much as I have on this board. I can’t be all that bad.
And for a mod to stealth pit me is incorrect behavior for someone in power.

Note, I am in no way complaining about the idea of Beckdawrek being pitted.

Hey!

Well, I am.

I don’t deserve this. It’s wrong on many levels.

I don’t expect everyone to like me. But I expect a level of respect. I’m kind to everyone. Even my detractors.

I split it from a pit thread, not a CS thread. What are you talking about?

The stuff about you was overwhelming a pit thread. I also asked permission about splitting it first.

To be clear you should clarify who you are responding to. The OP or another respondant.

The first part of the post was “Over in CS, Beckdareck”, that was an example of how the post should look, with a clear explanation first, then the rest of the new OP.

You got permission from Beck, not Smapti.

Even so the fact it was split was not clear to anyone who hadn’t read the THINKING thread. See Baker’s post.

Why can’t the OP be the mod’s announcement that they have split a thread?

The op isn’t a note from the mod because it’s a whole lot more work to do that. The discourse toools make it easy to select a bunch of posts and move them to a new thread. But if you want the first post to be from the mod who did that, they first need to create a post that just floats out there. And it would sit their looking weird while they gather the posts to move. And then they could move those posts to the stub thread they created.

I did that once. (On another discourse board) because the guy who became the OP had decent reasons to object to having become the OP. I created a second thread and then grabbed every post from the first and moved it. I’d be willing to do it on request if you have some reason to really not want to be the OP, but not just because “it’s confusing”. A mod note on the op, which is easy to add, should be plenty to avoid any real confusion.

I agree and should be standard protocol on all split threads.

I think i usually do that?

It’s reasonable to add a mention in the title that it’s a split and from where it was split.

Both the title and the OP text should make it clear. Belt and braces.

Oh really?

That’s helpful feedback.

Except you. Kidding of course.

You’re ok. I’ve said things about you in your pit thread. I never called you a filthy name. Or denigrated you for where you live. Or how you call your Father. Or accused you of being a Trumper. I never made fun of your title choices. I critiqued.

I didn’t throw you under the bus in a thread titled “mild”, which gives the posters the idea it’s safe to beat up on Beck for freakin’ posting too much. In the Pit.

It’s a message board folks, made for messages. Made for posts.

@puzzlegal …do you think I don’t know Walz told fibs only twice. I excuse him. But as you say in this negative time we live it goes viral. CNN has covered this to excess. I’m sure Fox even more.
I can make judgement on who I’ll vote for without some pundit telling me what to do.
I still think the man may have cooked in a contest for show. I don’t see him cooking much at home. Like I said I see grilling and or pancakes on Sunday from him. This is just my opinion. None of us really know, now do we?
Such ridiculous frivolity to argue about this.

FWIW, I didn’t think it was big enough to warrant its own thread. I just needed to call out what I thought was an exceptionally nonsensical claim, the CS thread wasn’t the right place, so I put it in the Thinking thread.

I am not a mod in atmb, but this really isn’t the place to discuss the details of the other thread. This is a thread specifically about mods splitting hijacks out of threads.

I concur that the thread is kinda unfair. I dont like to see members pitted, and yours seemed kinda outre.

Understood.
