Mods upgrading insults then issuing warnings.

I don’t want to start any trouble, but there was a non-warning issued to in the CS Gangnam Style thread that gave me pause:

But he didn’t say “get fucked,” he said “get bent.” Granted Leaffan’s post had no place in CS and twickster didn’t issue a formal warning, but I think slapping a Doper making a milder version of an insult for that insult sets a bad precedent.

So he said something out of line in CS, and I told him not to do it … why is this a problem?

I guess the OP wants to know where the line is. What if the original comment wasn’t “get bent” but “take a hike” or “get lost”? Is that over the line?

I concur with Agent Foxtrot that raping Dopers for mild insults is uncalled for, but I disagree with his implication that it’s worse than the Holocaust.

The problem is that mods need to be able to enforce the rule against insults but often to do so have to assume what the poster is thinking. A warning to me triggered two ATMB threads which started in part with a mod assuming what I was doing. It went basically like this:

Mod1: Warning for insulting another member.
Me: I wasn’t insulting another member.
Mod1: Yes you were.
Me: No I wasn’t. I was alluding to a famous SD meme.
Mod2: That meme is based on insulting a member. Your allusion to it indirectly insults that member.
Me: Bullshit. You can’t read my intentions like that.
<long discussions and eventually it comes out that this meme leads to hijacking of threads and more insults so even though I didn’t insult the member, the use of the meme is still off-limits. Meanwhile during this discussion …>
Mod1: You still get the warning for violating my instructions in the thread not to bring up TPR.
Me: Fair enough and I accept the warning on those terms and not that I insulted another member.
Mod1: I still think you insulted them.
Me:

So basically Mods assume they can read your mind so me saying “Go flagitate yourself.” will be interpreted as “Go fuck yourself.” even if I meant to whip yourself in the manner of someone doing penance as sarcasm for “Don’t be a martyr.”

Do you regard “take a hike” or “get lost” as euphemisms for “get fucked”?

Urban dictionary and the Online Slang Dictionary agree that that’s the basic meaning of “get bent.”

This said, if someone told another poster to “take a hike” or “get lost” in GQ I would regard that as being unnecessarily hostile and tell them to dial it back.

So, quoting Unca Cece, would “get attached with rotary fasteners” be acceptable?

Doper: You’re such a doof.

Mod: Doper, saying “you’re such a doof” is a nicer way of saying “you’re such a dick.” I’m issuing you a warning for calling another poster a dick outside of the Pit.

See what I’m saying?

IMO, “get bent” is indeed over the line in CS, and it’s absolutely appropriate for a mod to call out a poster for saying it.

But to first re-phrase the offending comment in a much more offensive manner was unnecessary, and frankly I’m not sure what you may have been trying to accomplish by doing so.

For what it’s worth, I rarely chime in on these kinds of threads, but this one leaves me scratching my head.

I see what you’re saying, but I disagree. Twickster did not moderate Leaffan at the level for saying “get fucked”. She just explained why “get bent” is not allowed in Cafe Society. She gave him a note, not a warning.

You’re overreacting.

Would be interesting to see an official mod response to this question.

That said…Leaffan was not given an official warning, so I’m calling tempest in a teacup here.

Your thread title was “Mods upgrading insults then issuing warnings.” but she didn’t really ‘upgrade the insult’, you’re not accusing multiple mods and most importantly you mention right in your post that no warning was issued. Wouldn’t you admit that you basically did the same thing as what you’re accusing her of? Changing what someone else did to make it more sensational?

No because that’s not what happened.
No warning was issued. Instead a note along with an explanation of why the note. I agreed with you that mods may incorrectly “know” what we mean but unless it is an actual warning I would take it as more of friendly advice.

Well I would have said, “No personal attacks in CS. Stop” instead of “Well that kind of sounds like an insult that’s not allowed, so stop.” In any event, I suppose I technically agree with the OP, but this is such a tiny matter moderationwise* that meh. In any event, telling people to “get bent” in CS shouldn’t be happening. He was told not to and all is well with the universe.

*Yes, we get that this isn’t worse than the Holocaust, but no one said it is; ATMB is where we question moderator decisions, so here we are.

I dare say it is.

Only a dozen or so million people got deaded by the holocaust.** twickster** single handedly took away the freedom of speech* of the entire world.
*To say “get bent” in CS.

It is, and I would be surprised if anyone really thought it’s OK anywhere outside the Pit. It’s an insult and nothing else. I understand the argument that “get fucked” is more severe than “get bent,” but they convey the same idea and neither one is allowed.

I was explaining, for anyone that might not know, that it was a synonym for “get fucked” and thus unacceptable.

No, see, I… I mean, **Foxtrot **was complaining because… **twickster **said that thing, and so I… eh, nevermind. :frowning:

I wouldn’t think “get bent” is acceptable either. It seems like a pretty straightforward situation, and I can’t find any fault with twickster’s modding. FWIW, which is not much.

By the way, none of this is synonymous with “why do you hate the mods”, no matter what the Urban Dictionary says.

Regards,
Shodan

You know any nutcase can enter definitions at UD right? I’ve seen it used as jokes for people at other venues by people who deliberately made up the entries. Please, let’s not go there in citing meanings.
