twickster's "knock it the fuck off"

I just wanted to say I didn’t like the tone of twickster’s note and wanted to make a personal plea to the administration and moderator team that telling people to “knock [whatever] the fuck off” is not conducive to the tone we want to foster on the SDMB or especially MPSIMS.

I am not at all opposed to the note itself and the reason it was given, just the verbiage and the tone.

I don’t know. They really did need to knock it the fuck off.

“Knock it the fuck off” sounds perfectly reasonable to me.

If you don’t fucking like the language we use around here, then you can fuck off too.

Since when did you become the arbiter of what ‘the tone’ of the SDMB should be?

I’ve got nothing against fucking foul language, snark, etc. But in a mod note, an official action by a moderator, I don’t think it’s appropriate and wanted to share my opinion. That’s all. I had a comment about a moderator action so I brought it up here in the appropriate forum. And in true Straight Dope form, someone built a straw man and used it to attack me (I never claimed I was an arbiter of language) within minutes of my comment.

Eh, as far as I know, I don’t think Twickster has a habit of doing this. So I’m inclined to shrug this one off.

I do, however, agree with Drew, that a certain level of professionalism (Even though they do this job for free.) should be maintained when the mod hat is on.

The key words here being “When the mod hat is on.” When it’s off; that’s a completely different story.

Who’s we?

Twickster’s note seemed perfectly in line with the other “verbiage and tone” in that thread, so I don’t see a problem. If she’d responded in that way in a memorial thread you might have a point, but her response seems appropriate to the circumstances.

Why?

I think this was a judicious use of the word in question. The term adds a forcefulness to the admonition and I suspect it was just this forcefulness that twickster wished to convey.

You’re fucking joking, right? What the fuck kind of tone do you think that might fucking be?

Plus it was a parallel construction to the sentence she was moderating. It was riffing off of it.

I agree with Drew overall, but in context, twickster was riffing on the offending posts, using cursing to great effect.

What he said. Or she.

On a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being her usual level of unprofessionalism, this is maybe a two. Just let it slide.

She.

I know you’re joking, but even joking, these posts shouldn’t be made…because it can become a “Well, they got away with saying an insult just because they added a smiley face. Does that mean I can call someone an asshole in IMHO and it’s okay as long as I add a wink smile?” really fast.

Nothing in that was an insult. If kambuckta’s post is not appropriate than neither was Twickster’s.

I really can’t find a way to not agree with this.

It does seem poor form for a mod, when, in fact mod’s most common actions would seem to be telling posters to, ‘dial that tone down’, or for having, ‘crossed a line’.

Off putting in a mod, in my opinion. But I very much doubt Twix, or any other mod, much care about our opinions on such things. But I agree with the OP, very poor form.
