Mods upgrading insults then issuing warnings.

Oh, don’t be such a morgenstern.

She dug your rap, baby! I don’t think her Holocaust remark was aimed at your amusing quip. She was heading off the inevitable posts of, “In the grand scheme of things, is this really so important??!!”

I just had to clear that up because I get all OCD when I see a misunderstanding unresolved, no matter how small.

I don’t understand why the mods keep saying, “Neither is appropriate in CS so that’s why he got the note.”

The OP knows that and acknowledged that in the OP. He is just concerned about the side issue of a mod upgrading an insult based on thought-modding.

He knows it was just a note, he isn’t complaining, he is honestly trying to open a discussion about insult upgrading in general.

Sorry to be trying to speak for everyone but the misunderstandings drive me batty!

I feel like I’m on Three’s Company and only I can hear the conversations in both the kitchen and the living room.

If someone was using it as some elaborate circumlocution for “Screw yourself” I would moderate it accordingly in GQ.

Yes, I am aware of this. However, in this case we have six independent entries that all generally agree with one another, as well as with the Slang Dictionary entry. This certainly suggests this is a generally understood meaning even if it might not be as good as Webster’s.

I see you’re misrepresenting the situation once again, just as you did in the thread title. “Doof” is not in any way a euphemism for “dick,” so your example fails.

OK, how 'bout “Dork”? “Dingus”? “Dirty Dingus Magee”? “Big Willie”? How 'bout “Oh, don’t be such a Johnson”?

This is such fun, tee-hee.

Twickster did not moderate Leaffan for some alternate version of the insult, twickster moderated Leaffan for the insult that Leaffan gave. She gave an alternate version of the insult as a way of explaining the meaning of the insult, and acknowledged that the insult given was a milder form.

There’s no upgrading going on, there’s no stronger punishment dished out because twickster decided what was meant was stronger than what was said. Leaffan got a friggin’ mod note and instruction for the actual violation performed.

So the answer to the OP is, if the moderators were running around willy-nilly dishing out harsher punishments because they chose to reword what was said and then moderated their reworded version, that would be wrong. That would be the same as altering a quote, in my books. But that isn’t what happened here, so there’s no reason to be concerned this is going on.

Can’t we cut to the chase and accuse us of of circling the wagons?? Please. That’s always my favorite part.

In my own defense I really didn’t see “get bent” on a level with “get fucked.” To me it was more of a “get lost” remark.

Anyway, as I stated in the thread in question, I had no intentions of discussing it further and I haven’t. The warning was duly noted and I shan’t make the same mistake again. Therefore the Mod Note worked and everyone is happy. Right?

I hope you’ve enjoyed your first day on this board.

No. Everyone isn’t. Now, I swear to god, I didn’t care anything about this whole thing one bit, but now I’m digging in my heels because I hate when things are misconstrued.

The OP wasn’t complaining about your mod note really. He doesn’t really care about whether you got a warning or a note or a banning, or beheading.

He was more interested in the idea that maybe, since Twickster took the time to ‘upgrade the insult’, that there was a possibility that in the future a poster might say, “you suck” and get warned for 'saying the equivalent of ‘you can suck my dick and lick my hairy balls’.

He just wanted to discuss that aspect. He wasn’t complaining. He wasn’t white knighting for you. He was curious about that one little detail.

I really didn’t care much, but now I do, because I hate when a poster has an (to me) interesting question and then a bunch of mods or posters chime in with, 'LOOK, NO ONE WAS WARNED, THE USUAL SUSPECTS CAN DIAL IT BACK A NOTCH AND PUT AWAY YOUR PITCHFORKS BEFORE YOU START ACCUSING US MODS OF CIRCLING THE WAGONS!"

I understand that I can’t speak for the OP…I am giving my interpretation of the OP, and even if he disagrees with my interpretation, I still can view the OP that way and think my interpretation would have pulled from Twix something like, "Oh, I can see where you are coming from, and yes, if indeed you say ‘you suck’ I will thought-mod that as ‘you can suck my hairy nuts’. Or, "No worries, Nzinga, I will not interpret ‘you suck’ as "you can suck my hairy nuts’.

What?

You know Leaffan, when I typed that, I knew it wasn’t written well, but I was hoping against hope that somehow the point still survived.

No such luck, huh?

Jeez. I was given a “don’t do this again” for an ambiguous slur, and I abided.

Not seeing the issue.

Listen. I know I am sounding shrill, but I’m not. I know by doubling down on this, I will sound shriller, god help me, I’m in too deep to turn around.

I will simply say that there is. no. issue. The question was about the way that Twix gave you the ‘don’t do this again’. It’s not an issue. It’s a question. My question is, "why did you decide to mention that get bent was another way of saying ‘get fucked’? Is it an indication that we posters may say things sometimes that you will interpret as a harsher term?

If Twix would have said, “Oh, no. I don’t intend to reinterpret phrases when I’m modding…this really was more about him saying something not fit for CS in general…would have been the same if he said, ‘get lost’.” I would have been clear.

But instead of that everyone started focusing on the fact that it’s not a big deal, there wasn’t a warning, etc.

I felt compelled to clarify that the original question warrants an answer. I didn’t even care about the answer (I don’t tell posters to get bent) I just was very interested in the question and wanted it to be addressed in good faith by the mods before they started accusing everyone of over reacting.

I know it’s too late now, I have over reacted. I just couldn’t help myself. Gonna drop it now, as I am painfully aware of how poorly I have communicated. But for the record, I don’t have an issue with you, I didn’t even read the linked thread.

:smack:

Leaffan, that is the crux of every post I’ve made in this thread. IT ISN’T ABOUT WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENED IN THE THREAD. It’s not personal, and it isn’t really about you. It is about the points the OP specifically put in THIS thread.

We all agree that you deserved a note. No need for me to read the thread, because we agree on that.

Because if Twix hadn’t added that, this thread would have been about “how can you possibly have given Leaffan a(n) [del]warning[/del] admonition about using ‘get bent’, that’s not an insult!!!1!!!1!!!'”. Sometimes the mods just can’t win.

Edited to add: And I still want Agent Foxtrot to acknowledge that he “upgraded” the mod action inappropriately twice.

Believe me, I know. I know. I read these threads all the time, and I know the mods just can’t win sometimes.

But at least you are responding honestly, not blinking all wide eyed like you have no idea what the OP meant.

Not every poster is known for giving the mods a hard time. Some of us would have happily accepted Twix’s ruling, but would have preferred if she had addressed specifically the point the OP was making about the jump from ‘bent’ to ‘fucked’.

But again, at least you didn’t just blink at my post and pretend I was speaking gibberish. I appreciate your response and I do agree that the poor mods can’t win sometimes.

HEY! Keep it civilized!

Nzinga, “get bent” means “get fucked,” not just in my mind but in general slang usage throughout U.S. society. See, for instance, the dictionary sources Colibri linked to – multiple definitions, voted on by hundreds of people, so not just some prank dreamt up by the mods in an effort to cover our collective asses.

I knew that is what the phrase generally means, but I wasn’t sure other people did, so I specified it in my note, which read, in its entirety:

If Leaffan had not known it previously, he does now, and has indicated his willingness not to say it outside the Pit, so he and I are good. Of course, he and I were good all along, as far as I know.
