Mods upgrading insults then issuing warnings.

No complaints from me.

Not an earth shattering issue, but it would have been better if the mod had just said to knock off the personal attack. “Get bent”, whatever it means, is not appropriate outside the Pit. But, given the common meaning of the phrase, I don’t see a problem here.

As I have explained multiple times, twickster did not “upgrade the insult”, she did not “thought mod”. She moderated the insult that was actually given. In the process, she added an explanation of the meaning of the insult, but also stated it was a milder form of that meaning. But the “punishment” dished out was appropriate for the actual violation, and not some “upgraded” violation.

The question the OP posted didn’t happen, there is no issue for the mods to address because they didn’t do what they are accused of doing.

“… but I think slapping a Doper making a milder version of an insult for that insult sets a bad precedent” sounds like a complaint to me.

I think it is not a big deal because the Mod was correct in the interpretation of “get bent” and by just a note if the bender come back and said that that interpretation was not intended then everyone is on the same page and no harm no foul. As being in the center of one of these “Mod thinks I meant something I didn’t mean” contraversies there is no reason to question the mod interpretation.

You are correct in that if the Mod explained that “get bent” means “get bent over and take it hard like the Bitch you are” and tells the bender that they have insulted women, homosexuals and chia pets that we have to examine how that Mod is interpreting members’ post regardless of the Mod issuing a note or warning.

Fine. Substitute “dick” for “idiot,” “moron,” or “stupid asshole.” Same point.

On edit, yes, Nzinga, Seated did interpret my OP correctly, but yes, things were blown a little out of proportion. I was just looking for some intelligent discussion on the matter and perhaps a clarification.

And for the record, I wasn’t challenging twickster’s ruling.

Ya know. When those nasty old frat boys said they got all bent out of shape for what the cops did when they busted the party, I had no idea they meant the cops fornicated with them. I now the headlines read “Cops beat off mob at State,” but I just didn’t put it all together. It wasn’t a handjob after all.

Thanks, Twicks, I understand that, and agree. I just explained my point poorly, so it sounded like I was challenging your note…sorry it came off that way. I’m not giving you a hard time, I do understand your note. I think a part of my problem was trying to use a shorthand term, (upgrade insult and thought-mod) but I only used those terms as shorthand because my posts were already long and rambling.

But, thanks for your response and for all the posters who actually took the time to understand my point, even though it was poorly made.

And Agent Foxtrot, I realize you didn’t mean for the OP to get blown out of proportion, but I was off and runnin’ on my own!

No prob, Nzinga – I think we’ve all made this whole issue way more complicated than it needs to be, given that no one seems to object with the comment having gotten a mod note.

The Dude posts here! Way kewl!

Have a White Russian on me.

How about the point where you twice referenced a mod warning when none was issued? You exaggerated to make a point, own it or shut up.

I mentioned that in post 12. And it’s not just that he did, it’s essentially what he’s accusing Twix of doing. Changing what someone else did to make it a bigger deal.

It depends. Are you now or ever have been bent?

I have heard “Get bent” used on TV. If “get bent” means “get fucked”, how can they get away with saying it?

Are you kidding? I’ve heard “motherfucker” used on TV. How can they get away with using that?

Speaking of Webster’s…

Definition of BENT

So, whether you mean “fucked” or not, it’s still not a nice thing to call someone.

While you’re almost certainly just poking fun, you DO know that “get bent” as an imperative and “being bent out of shape” aren’t the same? Right?

That’s a terrible example. “You suck” is unambiguously an insult and would not be allowed anywhere outside of the Pit. No matter how one interprets it, it would still get a mod note at least, whether the mod “upgraded” it or not.

Hey!!! It’s no fun if you say it first :frowning:

Bent if I know. Of course, there is precedent for this discussion, if by “precedent” we mean “when Colibri did it everything was deemed OK”. Then again, there’s clearly a significant difference, and I’ll leave identifying it and explaining it as an exercise for the student.
