I dunno. Now suppose there’s a bowl of Skittles with 150,000,000 Skittles, and 20,000 Skittles have a lethal poison, and can’t be distinguished from the others, only this time the Skittles are white American males, what are you going to do, leave the country?
A prospective immigrant, yes, almost certainly. “Let me in, and I will settle myself and my family, and prove myself a worthy citizen.” The asylum seeker is saying something more akin to “Let me and my children in so that we don’t die.”.
That second article is actually titled “EXAMPLES of Serious Crimes by Illegal Aliens”, not “Archive”, and I suspect it is not even remotely comprehensive.
Not at all. I’m not suggesting we incarcerate the entire population of illegal immigrants either.
Well, no, I was talking about legal immigrants, but since you brought it up, yes, we should definitely do a better job of keeping out the illegal immigrants. Do you disagree?
OK, then, can we admit the asylum seekers on a temporary basis? On the assumption that they will behave themselves and not give us cause to regret our generous humanity? Perhaps we could best demonstrate our benign intent by not tearing children from their mother’s arms. Be a pretty good start, I think.
Because it’s titled “Examples” for starters, and secondly because FAIR has no way to comprehensively track and tabulate every serious crime by illegal aliens. They’ve grabbed a few newspaper stories, that is all.
Wrong. I’m not suggesting we incarcerate the whole bowl, I’m suggesting we send it back to its respective home countries.
Illegal immigrants don’t commit crimes at higher rates than the rest of the population. So effectively this whole line of reasoning is “If we want fewer crimes, we should just have fewer people.” This kind of “solution” would be laughable in any other context – doesn’t any such measure get defeated by population growth?
Somehow it only stops being laughably dumb when the “fewer people” are nonwhite.
No, I didn’t say “all immigrants” either. If you read back through the conversation, you’ll notice that I’ve been talking about illegal immigrants. Larry Borgia mentioned “a population of 11 million people”, which is certainly too low a number for all immigrants, but just about right for the figures I hear thrown around for the size of the illegal immigrant population (cite1, cite2, cite3). The article running coach linked to was titled “examples of serious crimes by illegal immigrants”. etc.
I don’t think this point is as clear-cut as you seem to think so. For starters, I think you’ve slipped up here, because the normal phrasing I hear is “immigrants don’t commit crimes at a higher rate …”. By adding in the adjective “illegal” and focusing on that subset of immigrants, I suspect you’ve made the case harder for yourself to prove (but perhaps I’m wrong). What’s your cite for this?
shrug I’ve recently been educated in another forum that this place is all for running right up to the line of what the rules allow, regardless of the morality or rightness of doing so.
Can you link so we can see if it contradicts RickJay’s point in any meaningful sense? I don’t get around to all the interesting threads the way I used to.
How did that work out when your ancestors came to America? Do you feel that they were a problem for America and shouldn’t have been allowed in? Do you feel like they were a burden on America?
Immigration is what built America. Cutting off the flow of new immigrants hurts America’s future.
