At my tutoring job, one of my managers is a rather nurturing, considerate woman who is very motherly (big surprise; she’s a mom herself! ) and the other is a much more stern, authoritarian figure reminding me of a father.
(Just to clarify, both managers are women)
Not surprisingly, I like working with the ‘motherly’ manager much more than the ‘fatherly’ one. It’s not just the way they act; the fatherly one has kind of an ego, and never gives people the benefit of the doubt (just because she is my manager doesn’t mean I don’t have anything helpful to offer, considering I have worked there for two years longer than her and worked under the woman that trained all the managers :rolleyes: ). I was a little stressed about all of it, though, because I thought maybe I’m just being overly sensitive about one particular manager…maybe I was the one that needed to ‘grow up’ even though I felt like one manager was 1% Manager, 99% Hot Gas
A funny thing happened the other day. I came in early in the day to pick up the February schedule. I was talking with them about the promotion, and about helping other tutoring coaches (I’m the most experienced one there, and I’m also planning on being a manager myself so I pay close attention to what the managers do at various times of the day). While I was examining my schedule to make sure there weren’t any conflicts, the two managers got in a disagreement. The hardass manager was getting really defensive (she’s the lower-ranking manager BTW) and they kept arguing back and forth, and each time their voices got a little bit louder and their body language got a little bit more hostile…
There were some questions I needed to ask but I figured now was not a good time considering both of these petite women had a facial expression/body stance that looked like they were going to claw each other’s faces apart…I’ve never seen the managers so angry with each other and decided it would be wise to duck out of the office and scurry back to my car before someone started throwing chairs around or something
