I’ve never seen Monica Crowley on TV so I don’t know how she is there.
But I’ve listened to her on WABC either subbing for a vacationing host or during her own hour in the evening.
She used to do a show with Richard Bey and that was OK because Bey had a good bullshit detector and they would balance each other nicely, as far as that goes. Now that Bey’s gone Monica just lets her bitch flag fly.
Apparently last night they were taping her radio show for the BBC. I caught maybe the last 30 minutes of it. What did she talk about? The Clintons. She wanted to show Europe what the Clintons are all about. That’s the important thing now. When I tuned in she was interviewing Dick Morris who told her about how Bill almost beat him up. Then she had 15 minutes of calls from women who absolutely hate Hillary Clinton and know everything about how she operates. Her last caller was a guy in Chappaqua who was whining about how when Hillary does something like go to the library it’s just so disruptive. Monica was egging him on and feeding him lines like “so you don’t see the two of them together much, do you?” caller: “well…” Monica: “Thought so.” It was disgusting.
99.75% of her callers are like-minded Clinton bashers (Bill, Hillary, Martha Stewart - well she might as well be a Clinton the way Monica and her callers unashamedly tear her apart).
The other 0.25% are liberals who come on and make their argument. Does Monica debate them? No. She does a little back and forth shouty thing for maybe 10 seconds (I guess that’s what passes for a debate for her) then gets on her soapbox and makes this big speech and when the big speech is over, that’s it. Next call. No debate. Lame. Boo.
That’s not being a good radio show host. That’s being a propagandist.
I don’t know if this is pit-worthy but I put it here since it is a rant of sorts.
Unfortunately, WABC has taken a turn for the worse (excluding the utterly fabulous Curtis and Kuby, and of course, Sean Hannity). Getting rid of Bey (and Lynn Samuels) in favor of folks like Monica is a HUGE mistake
How is she different than Rush or Hannity or any of the other right-wing hate screamers on AM talk radio? Who are these moron callers , btw? How much of a nimrod do you have to be to call a radio show and say “mega dittos?”
Crowley got her start working for Nixon (and she wrote an apologist book about him) so it’s kind of ridiculous for her to go after Clinton. When I’ve seen her on TV she seems like a slightly toned down version of Ann Coulter with maybe a speck more intelligence. She looks like one of those typical Stepford blonde conservatives that the GOP seems to manufacture in a lab somewhere. She’s not as evil and crazy as Coulter or as smarmy and dumb as Hannity but I still wouldn’t listen to her yammer on the radio.
I don’t listen to Rush so I can’t comment on what he’s done lately. Hannity, despite his faults and his scary groupie callers, at least will bring on someone from the opposite camp from time to time so you get some debate, such as it is.
I haven’t heard Crowley do anything like that. She must have a great call screener because it seems like she simply won’t allow it, except for one liberal a week, and I haven’t heard anybody sneak in like they do with Hannity and Rush. Bush should give her a job in the White House because I’ve never heard a more uncritical Bush booster.
For the life of me I can’t figure out why I listen to this stuff.
I got hooked on WABC when I started commuting back in 1996, I believe. In the evening they had Lionel who used Bruce Anderson the news guy as a straight man. I thought it was pretty funny. Bruce Anderson would be roaring with laughter. Monica tries to bounce stuff off of Bruce Anderson and it usually hits the ground with a thud.
“dittos” or “mega-dittos” is just jargon for “I love your show.”
I agree. It was disgusting for this attractive young woman to be sucking up to an elderly, disgraced ex-President. I’m sorry to see that it worked for her career.
Monica, as well as Sean Hannity are complete political morons. I’m not faulting their politics, just their total lack of intelligence & wit. Neither of them entertain or force you to think. Have either of them ever had an original thought? I’ve never heard one. In fact, all I ever hear is cheap paraphrasing of GOP policy studies.
On the way home last week, I heard Lionel filling in on WOR. Haven’t heard him since WEVD’s demise. I’m pretty sure he now has his own program now on the NYC AM dial.
Sounds like standard talk-radio twaddle to me, especially with the hosts who don’t let dissenting callers get a word in edgewise. There are a few hosts who are better about it (Rush, much as I hate him for other reasons, actually lets people talk for the most part), but the vast majority of radio talk show hosts are there to hear themselves talk more than their callers… or even their guests.
Monica Crowley bascially follows the Dr. Laura model of hosting, from what I can tell. After all, it’s her show, right? :rolleyes:
Hey, you listen to talk radio, you get what’s coming to you. I listen to music on the radio, and my blood pressure stays low. (Well, not really, because I’m driving in traffic. But still.)
