I’m not sure why I seem to be having problems with this issue. For my display options I’m only offered 1280x1024 (too much eyestrain) 1024x768 (ok, but now a bit too big) and 800x600 (which is just silly).
The video card is a an S3 Graphics PrographicsDDR (if that helps), on a Compaq 7500 color monitor.
I know I’ve had this set at some point between big and teeny and dammit I liked it! (I loved it!) nod to Dana Carvey
Is there a way to tweak this so I can live happily working from home? The 1024x768 is just fine for checking in the boards, but it’s just too damn big for work purposes.
Basically, how can I get a happy medium happening here?
I’m not sure what the problem is. However, you can download the free utility Powerstrip.. It is known as a great utility and gives you complete control over all kinds of video card settings including screen resolution.
Basically what you have to do is set it to maximum available resolution (1280x1024?) and then enlarge everything by setting the system fonts to Large in Control Panel.
I don’t understand why somebody would use a resolution lower than the maximum supported? Is it because of sync being too low? Are you running old legacy applications that require a smaller resolution?
I am not sure I am following. My video card supports resolutions that you can only see with a magnifying glass and make the proportions of the screen look all screwy. The highest setting is usually not the best, and sometimes not even a workable choice.
High resolution does not mean small. There are two factors at work here.
A 13" monitor set at 800x600 will show things at approximately the same size as a 21" monitor set at 1280x1024.
Running 1280x1024 on a 13" monitor would indeed require you to use a magnifying glass, but on a big monitor, it’s perfectly comfortable. That’s what I’m using right now.
Maybe I’m not following. Running 1280x1024 on a 13" monitor would indeed require you to use a magnifying glass if you wanted to see the individual pixels(but why would you want to?), but I fail to see how it would make it hard to read text? You always have to adjust the font size/scaling to the appropriate resolution.
I personally would LOVE to have a 13" LCD that could do 1280x1024. In fact, I’d love an LCD that could do 600DPI (which would be around 6400 x 4800 on a 13").
Some applications (most Web browsers, for example) don’t allow zooming. Even though you can enlarge the text, the images are hard to see, and when some idiot designs a Web site with fixed pixel sizes, it won’t enlarge at all.
