Boy, just when I was ready to give up on Monk, they do a show that’s as good as the old ones were. Lately, there’s been too much slapstick “neatfreak” humor, but tonight they showed that they still know how to do pathos.
Cute little kid, huh? I think Monk ought to have kept him - the baby was good therapy for him.
I was afraid they’d take the easy way out and have Monk keep the kid. But no - the loneliness and pathos was just right. And Monk was right, he’ really wasn’t capable of taking care of the kid. A couple eps ago they had the ep where Monk was in the coffin and had a Trudy vision. He said he was wrong to say no about having a child. Great foreshadowing. Great ep.

I agree. I’ve been disappointed with gaps in plausibility and plots full of holes for many of the episodes this season, but this episode was a gem. I’m happy that they’re letting this kind of character development happen and giving it realistic ways to do so. Can’t wait til summer! Maybe they’ll be a little more consistent with the writing.
While I agree with the sentiment expressed here about the pathos, I felt there was something of a slip on the mystery side. I mean, the old, “I just remembered, the police never mentioned it was a…” solution is pretty lame.
The interaction between the kid and Monk was well played and it was supported extremely well by both of the supporting women in the cast. When playing with that small a child, so much is adlib and all did well.
