Is it pronounced “Redding” or “Reeding”?
Need answer fast …!
It is based on the real life Reading Railroad and it is pronounced “redding”.
It’s based on a Pennsylvania city of that name, and is pronounced red-ing.
Reading (/ˈrɛdɪŋ/ RED-ing; Pennsylvania German: Reddin) is a city in and the county seat of Berks County, Pennsylvania, United States.
Reading Railroad is one of the four railroad properties in the classic U.S. version of the Monopoly board game.
It is based on the rail company, which itself was based(at least partially) on the town.
Ok. I proved it.
The Monopoly players can bite me.
Of course they’re still arguing the point. But I’m gonna nap.
Thanks fast Dopers.
Even though you’re now napping, one more vote for red-ding. And I’m old so they have to respect my superior knowledge. You tell them that.
Bu-bu-but the theme song goes “Take a look, it’s in a book, Reading Railrooooad!”
Redding
and the second most often-landed on Railroad
In order of landed-onness, they are
Pennsylvania
Reading
B&O
Short Stop
Most people underestimate the power of having all four-- all of them are landed on frequently in the aggregate, at $200 per, if you have all four, with no cost of development.
Sorry, it’s Short Line.
Huh, well you learn something every day. We always called it Reeding Railroad but obv we were wrong. Thanks for the knowledge.
I’m so glad you said that Burpo.
I hadda go look. I thought, oh my God, I couldn’t have read that wrong so many years.
There are days I don’t trust my brain. A bunch of days.
Alas.
Lucky I have you lot.
You are right, of course, and I should not post while I’m waiting for my blood sugar to rise
That instantly popped into my head and I haven’t played Monopoly in decades.
Wish the rest of my brain was so cooperative.
I would have assumed it was most-landed on. There’s that damn card that sends you straight there! But, yes, Math.
Jail, Mister Fish. Jail.
There’s a card that sends you to jail. And don’t collect your $200.
(Maybe there’s a card for the railroad too, I forget.)
Everything between Jail and Got-to-Jail is landed on about 50% more often than the other squares. Free Parking is most-landed-on. The best monopoly to have is the orange, and the next best is the red.
It’s also good to have light blue, in addition, because you can engage in the fiendish practice of house-hoarding.
Also, if you INSIST that people play by the rules as written, a game lasts 60-90 minutes, is exciting, and can be won by strategy.
Well, we have a big problem here. The Reading Railroad kerfuffle lasted 30 minutes. That and the Lil 'Wrekker made some kinda frozen drink with alcohol and added too much rum.
Then it got louder.
Rules are argued through the whole game.
See, strategy went out the door about 2 hours ago.
Common sense never showed up. The girls are in a help me/I help you side scheme.
It won’t end well.
It’s too hot for badminton.
You and I play the same game, I see.
I used to love to play a real well-sorted out online version. Then one day, it’s just Gone. All other versions kinda suck. So I started playing Forge of Empires, and now my life is ruined.
