MoP-ing up after the Cataclysm: Updated WoW General Discussion 8/22/12

Posted this on WowInsider, but thought I’d stick it here too:

Okay, this is more bafflement than anything, but … I took my new prot paladin, Aigerlinn, through Shadowfang Keep to do the paladin class quest to gather stuff to make her Gavel of the Order. Mind you, I was soloing the dungeon at level 29 - managed everything except Lord Godfrey at the end. I just wanted the Gavel for transmog, though it was still an upgrade for me.

So anyway, imagine my surprise when Baron Silverlaine, the second boss I encountered, dropped the Baron’s Scepter. This weapon is better, if only marginally, than the Gavel. To earn the Gavel I had to collect items from the ground, collect other items off dead mobs, and fight my way through to the fourth boss (Commander Springvale) to loot the final necessary item from his corpse. Only to have the quest reward beaten out by an item randomly dropped by the second boss of the instance.

Dangit, if I’d been doing the dungeon/quest at level 20, looking forward to the upgrade the Gavel would have been over the weapon I had at 20, this would have been kind of disappointing. Seems to me the Gavel ought to be a bit better than a random drop from a boss I have to get past anyway on my way to the Gavel.

OTOH, I had some “otherwise” luck. The rare spawn “Deathsworn Captain” showed up and dropped chest armor that was an upgrade and also shared the same model I was using to transmog my existing chest piece, and Commander Springvale dropped me a shield upgrade.

Since I’m sure someone will ask how I was getting upgrades from a level 20 dungeon when my character is level 29: She’s a dwarf questing through the default dwarf/gnome leveling progression: Dun Morogh -> Loch Modan -> Wetlands and, being a completionist, has simply out-leveled her current content. And her server’s AH seriously had nothing for a sub-30 pally tank, weapon-wise. All of the level 27-29 1h weapons were Agi or Int weapons.

Just for fun I decided to take my level 90 rogue to Deepholm to take a crack at Stonecore, since I didn’t do any dungeons during Cata. I made it past the second boss (the dragon) with little difficulty. From there I proceeded to the next area, which was a massive cavern with the trash spread out in little groups of 4-5 mobs. I engaged the nearest group of mobs … which promptly brought the entire freaking cavern full of mobs down on me. I mean, I’m talking mobs aggroing on me from 100+ yards away. Probably 30 or more elite mobs.

Was that supposed to happen? I don’t see how even a full party of five at level 85 could have handled that.

I’m betting that since you were a single character, you probably weren’t able to take out the sentries that patrol around that area. If you don’t take them down first, they raise the alarm and that brings the other groups running to the fight.

When running with a 5-man group, the party will usually carefully target those wandering sentries with ranged attacks to take them down while they’re patrolling between the groups. That allows you to pick off the individual groups without getting any adds (if the party is careful).

Hey, Quasi and Rik, keep an eye out for my pandaren monk on Alex. The name is Heshang. I was leveling her all weekend and didn’t really get a chance in the middle of it to look around for someone from Knights to ask for an invite. I may be on tonight.

ETA: I still think monks are kind of OP. But then again, my other toons on Alex are a paladin and a DK, so maybe OP is my playstyle…

I’ll add Heshang to my characters’ Friends lists so I’ll see you if you’re on

Well darn it. I wasn’t even on Heroic difficulty. I had fun going back and soloing WotLK heroics at level 85 (though, granted, I did them all back at level 80 so knew what to expect). Here’s hoping all of the Cata dungeons don’t have solo-stymieing mechanics… I’m thinking I won’t be able to solo Throne of Tides, either. That’s the one and only dungeon I tried during Cata, and I seem to remember it having some boss encounters that wouldn’t be solo-friendly.

OK, what makes someone put dozens and dozens of deviate scales for sale on the Auction House, over and over again, all for 4 or 5 silver? This is the same guy trying to unload this trash for weeks and weeks. Dude, give it up. Everybody who wants a deviate scale for their really low level leatherworking already has one. You cannot sell them. They are vendor trash. You are spending 1 silver every auction trying to sell these, and you’re selling them in STACKS OF ONE.

People who sell low level trash in stacks of one. What’s wrong with them? No, you cannot sell your white items you made to level your crafting. Greens you can sell for cheap to enchanters. Whites are trash. They just are.

Oh, and would it kill Blizzard to split “Trade Goods>Metal and Stone” into two categories, so I don’t have to look at the assholes trying to sell their heaps and heaps of stone? People want to buy metal, not stone. This is why when you list 20 stacks of stone for 5 silver each, nobody buys it, for the same reason you’re trying to sell it. Stop trying to sell this crap.

Well I just levelled Engineering on my DK sought a good chunk of stone so it is used by some people. The best way to avoid stone is to use the filters ‘ore’ and ‘bar’ in that Metal and Stone category btw, takes seconds.

Heh. I was questing in Western Plaguelands last night and, for the first time ever, I encountered that “Scarlet Interrogator” rare spawn. It was hilarious:

“I haven’t eaten in weeks; this bread is mine! FOR THE SANDWICH!”

Seconds? Do I look like I’m made of seconds? Yes, I figured out to search for “bar” and “ore” myself. But it is still annoying. Yes, occasionally you might want to buy some stone. But stone sells for a few silver per unit, metals sell for half a gold to 2 gold or more per unit. And this is because there are always people trying to unload excess stone on the AH because they’ve leveled past using it, and very few people who need to buy it. In other words, vendor your stone, it’s not worth the hassle.

I don’t know if I’d go this far, necessarily, but I’d definitely suggest not selling it in lots of 1. It’s annoying and nobody ever buys one piece of stone. Put it up in lots of 20, a small number at a time to see if it sells. If it doesn’t sell after a reasonable amount of time, vendor it because clearly nobody wants to buy it.

I’ve found that Coarse Stone (from Tin nodes) sells consistently. The other types, not so much.

Hey, cool! My level 51 paladin was traveling through Blackrock Mountain from Searing Gorge to Burning Steppes, when she spotted this guy patrolling around the circular path. Almost killed him for loot before saying, “Wait a minute! Hunter pet!” Logged out my paladin, logged in my hunter, hearthed to Shrine of Seven Stars, portaled to SW, then flew to Blackrock Mountain, walked in and tamed him.

I love the model, but I don’t know how much I’ll actually use him. My hunter, Nouveus, is more of a cat-herder. (Literally, when he casts Stampede - multi-colored cats everywhere!)

My guildie’s smart AND resourceful!

On another, topic I found out that Clint Howard (Ron’s brother) plays WoW, under the name of “EXTAS” in the Dark Iron Realm.

Know of any other celebs who play?

Q

The actor who played the Ferengi kid, Nog, on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, is an active WoW player (and has been interviewed on WoW Insider, IIRC).

First thing I see in my email this morning is a notice from Blizzard that my account has been closed for “exploitive activity”. WTF?

At first I thought it was one of those scam emails that I get occasionally, but no, this one is the real deal. I tried to log in, and got the banned account notice.

I do not buy gold, or do anything else that would justify an account ban. I ran a virus scan on this computer, came up clean. Reset the password for the email account tied to my WoW account, reset my battlenet password…still can’t access my account. Filled out an appeal form through battlenet, but that can take 24-48 hours for a response.

I’m pissed off…but I’m not sure who to be pissed at yet. Blizzard for randomly banning my account for no damn reason? Some unknown hacker who somehow got access to my account by unknown methods? Fucking gun grabbing liberals just because?

GRRRR. OAK SMASH. Something. I guess. GRRR

It sounds like you got hacked - it happened to me once. Do you use an authenticator?

No, I don’t. Really don’t want the extra hassle, but might have to look into it. Unless Blizzard just annoys me to the point that I look for another game.

It’s not really that much hassle, especially compared to all the hassle you have to go through to get your account back after it’s been hacked. It’s better now than it used to be, too–it rarely makes you enter the key unless you log in using a different computer. Since I always play from the same machine, it’s actually surprising to me anymore when I have to dig it out and enter it, that’s how rare it is.

I hope everything goes smoothly and you’re able to get your account restored soon! Hacking sucks.

Indeed. Hackers make the 8th Amendment seem like a bad idea.

OK, everybody knows this, right?

Go to Stormwind, find the Pandaran camp, and find the baby panda cub Meng Meng. Squee at her cuteness. Then /hug her.

Eat the bamboo shoot she gives you, and squee at yourself.

This broke my 6 year old daughter’s brain.
