Being a Lutheran, I have a fondness for Bach’s pipe organ music, and I’d like a selection from that. I also want A Mighty Fortress and I Danced In the Morning worked in somewhere. My parting shot, however, is as the service closes, I want Johnny Cash’s cover of We’ll Meet Again (the end theme to Dr. Strangelove) to be played. I’m aiming for a good mix of sacred and profane…

Also, because I’m a fireman, I’ve made my wife promise on a stack of Bibles that if I ever have need of a department funeral, absolutely no Amazing Grace, and no bagpipes.

I’m surprised no one else has nominated it. The first time I heard it, it struck me as the perfect funeral song. (And yes, seriously, that’s the only music being played at my funeral :- it’s in my will).

Having recently buried my father, I have spent some time thinking on this.
I have since been telling those who need to know that I want ‘Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go’ by Wham to be played at my service.

Ah, folks after my own heart! Great choices. As for myself, I’ve requested “Ding Dong the Witch is Dead” from the Wizard of Oz. An instrumental version, if possible, and played very slowly and sadly in hopes that it will take people a little while to get it.

I went to the funeral of a guy who was, for many years, the librarian at my high school. He was important in the world of librarians, and even has a youth literary award named for him. As his casket was borne out of the church a slow dirge was playing. It seemed familiar and I finally “got it”. It was the school song, played at a slow march.
