My husband, grandson and I were at a train show held in the Lincoln Square Mall in Urbana, IL this past Saturday. I was in this lovely shop - can’t remember the name of it now for the life of me. They sell dishes, decor and kitchen accessories in one part, while the other part is dedicated to interesting foodstuffs from all over the world.
I was in the chocolates section when I saw it. I nearly bought it…
Well, why didn’t you? You could have started a whole new Doper craze, with hundreds of us scheming a way to get to a store that carried it, or seeing if shipping to [insert non-US country here] was affordable…
but you didn’t buy it. So we’ll never know
wanders off to calculate how many hours it would take to get to Urbana, IL from Montreal…
And… the only reason I can give you, mnemosyne, is that I had a sinus headache that was really starting to bother me. I would later find out that I have myself a nice little sinus infection (blah!), and it was wreaking havoc with my tastebuds. Still is (dammit!).
Hey, didn’t say it was a good reason, just a reason.
Oh, you really should have. In the name of science or fighting ignorance or something, go back! Can you go back?
I’m intrigued, kinda weirded out but intensely curious. I love salty-sweet stuff like chocolate dipped pretzels, but meaty salty sweet…the mind boggles. I’ll be looking for this concoction forever now.
Sorry your sinuses suck.
Looks like you can order it online, so someone please do. I would, but I’m broke and if I could afford a $7.50 + shipping chocolate bar, I’d give it a go. As a lover of both chocolate and bacon, I must know what this tastes like. My WAG is it’s a damn sight better than a mouthful of Oscar Meyer and Hershey’s, but you never know.
Vosges chocolates are fabulous. Unusual exotic flavors such as curry powder, ancho and chipotle chilis, or wasabi mixed with fine chocolate. A taste treat. The bacon bar is really good-meaty, salty, smoky, and chocolatey. What more could you ask for?
Ah, so dwyr… you’ve had the bacon bar, and it was deemed good. As I am a lover of both bacon and chocolate, would you say that it would be worth a side trip back to that mall when I visit Urbana again? We go over there at least once a month, sometimes more often (like maybe tonight to pick up our new dining room table).
As noted in the small print in one of my previous posts, there was a chance that I might go back to the store tonight.
We - my husband and I - did.
Before we decided to make that small detour from picking up our new table (we bought the chairs tonight too! yay!), I checked the store hours on the Lincoln Square Mall’s website: Open 'til 8 p.m. Monday through Friday. Bonus - we’d have plenty of time to get there and peruse the store, grab one of their sandwiches, and nab some Bacon Chocolate. Chocolate Bacon?
We pulled up in the parking lot just after 6 this evening. We were both looking forward to this very, very much! When we walked into the mall, however, all was not well. It took a minute for my brain to process what my eyes were seeing.
The Art Mart was closed for the day.
My mind went into immediate “WTF?!” mode as I walked up to one set of doors, only to discover a sign stating , “As of February 1, 2008, we will close at 6 p.m.”
I was unamused. We had just missed by mere minutes - but I was also frustrated that the website had not been changed. I could understand if the new closing time had only been in effect for a week or so - but not a month and a half.
More importantly, though, is the fact that I do not have my BACON CHOCOLATE!
I’ve had some. A friend broke out a bar at a party. I thought it would be my new God. Sadly, I didn’t like it much. I thought it was interesting but not amazing like, say, bacon candy. It was just kind of bitter, salty bacon-chocolate with weird texture. I guess the bacon was necessarily too “preserved”. Everyone else straight hated it. And I was surprised; these were total enlightened with 80% dark infused with ginger type hipster chocolate eaters, too (reeally not my thing, so I thought they’d like it much more than I did).
Odd, I didn’t find it bitter at all. I did wonder how it would be with a darker chocolate than the milk chocolate they used. Of course, tastes vary widely and I do like a lot of unusual things.
I received one for xmas and drooled over it in anticipation for nearly a month awaiting the proper alignment of the planets so that I might safely rejoice in what was surely going to be a cosmic conjoining of ultimate flavor.
I’d much rather have had a Whatchamacallit. The bacon bar just was not good.
Well, we went back again today. My husband hated to see me go without my chance at tasting bacon chocolate.
I liked it. It wasn’t earth-shattering, orgasmic, “OMG I’ma gonna die this is sooooo good!!!11eleventyone”, but it was pretty damned tasty to me. I think I would have liked it even better if the chocolate had been a smooth dark (not too bitter, though).
Popped a square out and took a leisurely sniff. I’m sure the patrons of the mall thought I was just a few cards shy of a full deck, but hey. I figured I should go all out, you know? Anyways, it smelled just like bacon and chocolate. Huh. Go figure.
Took a bite and slowly chewed. Slightly crunchy, nicely salty and bacony. Chocolate was really nice, too.
Am I happy I tried it? You betcha. Would I go out of my way to spend 7 bucks on another bar of it… meh - I don’t think so. It’s good, but it’s not that good.
