I tried it a couple of years ago and was underimpressed. Maybe my expectations were too high.
Have you eaten it yet? Did you like it?
Am I to assume there is more to this confection than cooking bacon and then dipping in chocolate? Cuz I think I could pull off that recipe at home, if the concept appealed.
vomits a little in her mouth
I can get it at the store down the street from my house. I thought it would be better than it is, but it ain’t.
That’s pretty much it. You dip bacon cooked until it’s crunchy in the chocolate of your choice, then let it cool until the chocolate hardens.
At least that’s how I’ve seen it done.
I had a dark chocolate bar with crispy bacon bits. It wasn’t bad, but I’m not a bacon nut.
in whose mouth?
Well we have to assume it was her own. I mean, you can’t really dust for vomit, can you?
Eh. I had my former favorite – the deep-fried Twinkie – at the LA County Fair last week. For some reason, this year, it just didn’t hit the spot. Nor was I impressed by the cream-filled licorice I had forced upon me. I’m beginning to think that the shine of freaky fair food is beginning to wear off for me.
That being said, I’m going to grab a paper bag and join OpalCat.
I had the chocolate-covered bacon (I decided I was going to try one decadent fair food) at the Orange County, California fair this year, on my way to see Weird Al. I wasn’t impressed. he bacon seemed like it had been cooked a long time ago, like the dried-out bacon you get on a Subway sandwich. Maybe if the bacon was freshly cooked it would have been better.
I love this stuff, but it’s not like it’s hard to get.
My father and I have been home-brewing for a few months. We’ve been toying with a certain idea, and once we’ve got something for a base we shall attempt… BACON BEER!
I assumed with all the bacon love on this board, at least on person would have been envious.
Then I tasted it.
Blech. The bacon did indeed taste like it had been cooked too long ago, and for too long.
The deep fried jelly beans were a waste of time and money (I didn’t get them myself). It’s basically a big ball of batter with a few jelly beans thrown in. When you get a bite with a jelly bean, it tastes like a blueberry muffin. Otherwise, it tastes like deep fried batter.
The mini donuts were very good, as always. The Maine baked potato was as well. My boyfriend and I shared a corn dog and a White Hut burger (I wish White Hut would move to central MA). I avoided the nasty burger. I don’t know all the details but I know the “buns” are Krispy Kreme donuts. I definitely avoided the deep fried butter (where’s the vomit smiley when you need one?)
I’m really disappointed about the bacon.
We ate less and bought less than usual. We left with new collars for our dogs (black with flames for Holly and red plaid for Ginger). We also got some treats (chicken stuffed trachea). Other than that, we got Musicians Hall of Fame fly swatters (they’re shaped like guitars!) and nothing else. It was fun but way too hot. It was so cool when we left the house and it’s been cool for days. We didn’t think to check the weather.
I love this stuff, but it’s not like it’s hard to get.
Well, no. But, it’s like everything else at the fair. It’s supposed to taste better at the fair. I can eat a loaded baked potato whenever I want but it’s not the same as getting it at the Big E.
We should compare Fair foods. I’ve never heard of a Maine potato. Do y’all have elephant ears and chicken-on-a-stick?
I went to Bacon Camp earlier this month. One of the attractions is that you get to try the entries in the cooking contest. There were two chocolate-covered bacon entries and one toffee-chocolate-bacon entry. All three were good, but they were all made with high quality bacon and high quality chocolate. The toffee entry was my favorite in that genre. But, yeah, wouldn’t go too far out of my way for them.
There was a bacon-apple pie that was excellent. The bacon wasn’t overwhelming, but very nicely complemented the apples. That was the most successful dessert, IMO.

I’ve eaten ostrich at the Ostrich Festival.
The Maine potato is probably a Big E thing. The Big E property has a building for each state in New England. Inside each building is stuff specific to that state. The Maine Building has the baked potatoes. I’m sure there’s other stuff but I didn’t walk through that building today. I just went for the baked potato. In years past, the potatoes were huge. I don’t know if there’s something wrong with the crops or if they’re using a different type but they’re much smaller. They now give 1-1/2 potatoes to fill the dish that used to have 1.
The CT building had the chocolate bacon. They also have Legos. There used to be a vendor outside that sold steamed burgers. They were so good. They tasted like meatloaf on a bun. I haven’t seen them the last 2 years though.
The VT building has a huge Ben and Jerry’s counter and another one for Cheese. I think it’s Cabot but I might be wrong. The MA building has a huge clam chowder counter and a lot of raspberries. I think it’s NH that has the pumpkin ice cream that I like so much. NH, VT, and MA all have lots of Maple stuff. I don’t know if the other 3 states do. I didn’t go in MA or RI today.
In addition to state foods, they also have information on the states and local vendors. We got our dog collars from a NH vendor (I think. It might have been CT).
When you get away from the state buildings, you start finding the regular fair food. You can get pretty much everything fried.
What is chicken on a stick? My boyfriend’s mom calls chicken teriyaki chicken on a stick but I don’t think that’s what you mean.
I wanted to try a fried whoopie pie (and I’m not even sure why) but I couldn’t find them. I don’t even like regular whoopie pies - I make pumpkin, but for some reason, it just sounded really good.
