(At present the unwelcome guests are in the open, on horseback - you might struggle a little to find attachment points for a Web.)
Would you, by any chance … negotiate? (What do I win? )
I think Bjarni has the final say (though I hope he asks his friends what they think). Ulf is happy either way.
Did any one else notice that we forgot to discuss the Gleaned intentions of the guys outside. On the other hand I think it will be fun to Jorund in action of course we might want to give some thought to what we want our next move to be after we kill another friend of the Jarl, maybe we shouldn’t kill him just try to knock him out. Any how just some out of game thoughts that Jorund just can’t express.
I think this would make a great t-shirt, or an SDMB signature.
In an Internet roleplaying thread, it takes a lot of time to spell out every move.
Imagine if
Malacandra posts:
Gautrek nods his approval and Ivar learns he is thinking “All is going well here - let these fools pack”.
Then I post:
Ulf goes inside.
And you post:
Jorund goes inside
And Sachertorte posts:
Bjarni goes inside
Many real-time hours have passed; Ivar still hasn’t told us anything and there are probably mass defections from the thread to a Mafia game!
We played it straight and in the spirit of the game.
Now we know Gautrek is a liar and intends to steal our most sacred possessions. He’s also insulted Bjarni.
I am very happy to follow Bjarni’s lead here.
If he orders Gautrek off his land and Gautrek departs, that gives us time to decide what to do about the threat of revenge.
If he calls Gautrek a liar, that’s true.
If Gautrek fights, we get to see two Berserkers, two Casters and a Fighter in action.
Fair enough I’m still figuring out how this works
Hey me too!
My total experience of Internet roleplaying began just over a month ago - on Feb 27! - as a player in the Middle Earth thread here.
Since then I’ve started a game of my own (English countryside flavour, don’t you know?) and joined this one.
I have played a lot face-to-face and since both the other GM’s (What Exit? + Malacandra) are playing in my game, I think I can safely say we share basic principles:
- it’s about everyone enjoying themselves and working as a team*
- the players should post in the right spirit (e.g. Sachertorte saying Bjarni doesn’t know what Ivar has found out yet)
- the DM changes things if it’s not working
- excitement is good, references (e.g. to Tolkien) are good and humour is good**
*in face-to-face, you sometimes get a player who conceals his abilities. I don’t like that much, but at least you are sharing a lot of information around the table.
In Internet roleplaying, I think it’s useless and destructive to hide your skills. Imagine being us caught in Jorund’s Lightning strike, or not organisng how the Warriors protect the casters…
** in the Middle Earth thread, I am happily playing a Wose Druid. The party have smoothly helped me recruit a massive Wolf, Fang, as a bodyguard.
So far, so good … but now there is a clear conspiracy to call Fang … Fluffy.
[Hysteria ON] They will pay! All of them!
Ya I’m having fun but I haven’t done any face to face role playing in 15 years so I’m still trying to remember that as well.
The first bit is the most important.
I’m lucky, because not only have I played with the same group for 29 years  , but I also run a school roleplaying club.
As a result, I have a tendency to ‘switch on’ my teacher personality.
It can help players get back into the swing of things, but it can also irritate. :o
Please let me know if I do the latter!
wow. The first fight… i had no idea thats what “berserkers” did. The whole beararm thing? I think i’d react just as that guy you faced did- scream like a little girl and run away!
Me too- solid skills, too.
Oh, it was nothing really … Ulf’s chest swells with pride!
(He is already hoping to ask the Skald for a short poem or song* which includes the line ‘scream like a little girl and run away’)
For your interest:
- I like to call it ‘fighting bearhanded’
- I may get better at it
- if I appear dead after Berserking, try to stay with me…
T’was one fateful morn in the month of May,
When Gautrek the liar came to make hay
In sight of Bjarni’s ship in the bay
But he screamed like a girl and ran away!
I’ll gladly poke you with a stick if need be.
I was thinking more of guarding the body, actually!
Poking with a stick would be funnier.
OK, I had** huge ** respect for you after your poetry in the Middle Earth thread. Now you’ve lost some of it.
Just read what the punishment is and its got to be easier to kill the Jarl then to pay up. I mean wow.
Really? You don’t think we could find that much gold/Silver?
The magical item is kinda tough indeed.
The Jewels is the part that annoys me though. Damn Ottar the Fat! Maybe we can give him laxatives and lower his weight!
But I’m assuming this Jarl is sort of a Kingly fellow. Ie: the other dudes listen to him. So if we kill the Jarl, we’re going to have alot of bad reputation points AND we’re going to have to deal with like 5-10 other angry leaders probably.
It all depends on who’s in charge of “The Thing” and if the Jarl influences “the Thing” more than the others around him.
Don’t fight the railroad tracks. If we need to come up with that much, we will.
No railroad. You guys want to go and live in exile in Darkest Africa or somewhere a long way from Viking culture, that’s fine with me. I’m sure we can come up with things to do.
(You nearly threw me a loop just now by going off peacefully with Gautrek, but I’m sure I could have coped. )
