More Good Fortune For My Family

I think a simple statement will be more effective than a nicely phrased lead in, so-

Yesterday, my Uncle Max’s live-in care giver disappeared with Max’s wallet, my cousin Sandy’s car, and a handgun belonging to Sandy’s SO.

The man(here after referred to as Bastard), was never a perfect choice. But Uncle Max needed help. Somebody with proper certification and training would cost about $800 a week. That was simply not affordable. Bastard was available for only $100 a week plus room and board. He had a gambling problem. He had a drug problem. But everybody thought they were little problems. Besides, this could be his chance to go straight and get clean. Maybe if we showed him trust, he turn out alright.

And it was either have Bastard help out with Uncle Max or stick him in a low-end nursing home where folks are warehoused while they wait to die.

Nobody was happy with the arrangement. But, there was no other way.

Now this.

BTW-Sandy's house is currently undergoing massive work in the kitchen due to a mold inside the walls. At the moment, it has no heat or airconditioning.

This would be more organized except that my mind is in a rather disorganized state at the moment.

Uncle Max ran a restaurant for 30 years. He married a woman who loved him until the day she died. The, he was lucky enough to find another woman who did the same. With the chaos caused by Bastard, and everybody scrambling to take care of him, Uncle Max now feels powerless, useless, and a burden.

Wallet shmallet. Bastard stole my Uncle's sense of self worth.

I hope things turn out okay for you.

And the Lord sayeth, “Let there be smegma.”

And the Bastard was born.

What an utter fucktard.
Sounds to me like it’s time to sit down with Uncle Max, and have a long talk about something he is very good at, and you know nothing about. Let him know that he’s more than just decoration. Even if he can’t do for himself, do to whatever limitations brought about the situation in the first place, you can always ask his opinion.

As for the ambulatory nut-sweat that pulled the rug out of from under your Uncle, what are the odds of catching him?

Sorry to hear that shit. But if Sandy reports the gun and the car stolen, and if Bastard tries to use any of Uncle Max’s credit cards (which I’m sure have been reported stolen as well), there may be a chance of catching the son of a bitch.

What will you do now about Uncle Max’s care? Hire someone else? Is it possible to get him any government subsidized care? I’m sure Philly as a local Agency on Aging that could help with that determination. In fact, here’s one that looks like a good place to start.

Best of luck to you, and I second Enki’s advice.

Thanks, but sadly my Uncle Max lives in Florida.

I could have just moved in with him for a while if he lived here.
Being unemployed and on SSI, I have the time.

But if I move to Florida for even a few months, I lose my SSI, my healthcare etc.

I proposed flying Uncle Max up here so that I can stay with him at my folks condo. My parents are currently in Florida for the winter.

This seems to be the best solution despite the fact that the condo isn’t wheelchair accessible(he can do the stairs but it’s painfull and takes a long time. I’m seeing a bunch of friends saturday. Hopefully they can help me build a ramp), that he won’t be able to bring the electric chair and will have to use the manual, and the fact that I can’t drive him anywhere due to my lack of car or license.

That's a great way to sum up the situation- Putting the 95 year old on a plane to a northern state during winter so that a chronically depressed man who sometimes has trouble taking care of himself can help him is the BEST idea anybody's had so far.

Re-Programs And Benefits
Uncle Max is already getting all the benefits from all the programs I’d think he’s eligible for.
Last I checked, we’ve utilised the fact that he’s a senior, a veteran and a jew.
