Who is seeing more lightning bugs? Last few years I’ve seen hardly any, now lots. NE Kansas.
Saw my first ones in SE Michigan tonight. Showing up as expected.
Also NE Kansas. Went to take the dog out to pee after dark last night and there were two of them on the glass of our storm door. They didn’t light up, they were just sitting there. I looked but didn’t see any more lighting up while I was out with the dog.
Also FWIW I think I heard my first cicada of the summer (the annual kind) last night around sundown.
I went out with the dog around sundown last night and there were fireflies everywhere. One lit up right in front of the dog’s face while she was squatting to pee and startled her a bit. (She has a bit of a phobia when it comes to flying insects.)
There was one in my house last night. I love fireflies, they do not exist on the west coast.
It is pesticides and herbicides (vast quantities of which are applied to lawns) which have diminished fireflies, which breed in meadows.
I was in NW Indiana last week and I have never seen anywhere near so many fireflies. They were even visible long after sundown, which I’m not sure I’ve ever experienced, and they were everywhere–little flashes of light all over the place. Absolutely delightful.
I have been completely charmed by fireflies ever since I was I was a young Ulf. I haven’t noticed their numbers diminishing over the years. Maybe I’m just Ulf the O’Blivious though. In any case they were certainly not diminished last week.
I recently moved from St Louis to Springfield IL. I had not seen a lightening bug for years… now, every night, all night, a cacophony of light just off my patio. Reminds me of my youth!
I’m seeing a pretty normal number, but they seemed to be late arriving.
