More SDMB memes you're sick of

Look in the mirror and ask yourself why there are so many of them.

It is not “just the term people use.” It’s a term carefully chosen by the group in order to convey a certain feeling. They think it works for them because it paints the opposition as “pro-death” or maybe “anti-life”. It’s not just some neutral term that arose from nowhere. So, it’s perfectly valid to say, “You aren’t pro-life, you are, at best, pro-birth,” because that’s really as far as most of these people take it. I do feel a need to mention the notable exception of Catholics (in particular, although I realize many protestants hold this view too) who actually work to help the women who have unplanned pregnancies, and to help children born into unfortunate circumstances. They also oppose the death penalty. Those people are somewhat deserving of the name “pro-life”, even thought I still find it divisive. The anti-women camp, however, can kiss my ass.

I’m pretty sick of seeing people use variations of their own names to refer to family members.

“So today I was playing with Merkboy when his sister Merksis comes in and…”
I’m sure it was cute to some people at some point in time, but I know I can’t be the only one sick and tired of this, right? To me it’s annoying and not clever.

But much the same could be said of the term “pro-choice.” It’s a mealy-mouthed term coined to draw attention away from the fact that an abortion kills something which, if not fully human, is very close to being so. If it isn’t infanticide, it’s the nearest thing to it. Saying you are “pro-choice” makes you no less of a weasel than saying you are “pro-life.”

But then, politics both left and right tends to generate an awful lot of mealy-mouthed euphemisms.

Ending sentences with prepositions.

Just kidding.

Um, no it’s not. At all.

Cat threads.

No more so than it is for someone to be “pro-choice” and also hold some other belief that denies people a choice about something (whether to own guns, for example).

People who complain about cat threads.

People who complain about threads they didn’t have to read.

People who complain about cat threads without pictures.

Cat threads without pictures (hey, no one said I have to be consistent).

Any and all use of the term classical liberal.

no, you’re not alone, although I’ll grant you that sometimes it’s easier in a thread to have that sort of name, so you can figure out who is being spoken of. My spouse is Snookie, by the way, thanks for asking.

I have no mind, and I must meme.

well, I never said I like the term “pro-choice.” I don’t. So what? That isn’t what the OP was about.

MEME, for what it’s worth.

Such easy offense at “Why did you have to bring ‘Fat’ into the title” It’s a descriptor people.

Wait a minute. Isn’t Meme that dame that dies in Lobbo Wem? No matter how many times you see it, she dies every time.

Junior modding can be pretty annoying

BTW, please don’t post in anything other than english.

Two responses:
(1) While there is some basic truth to what you are saying, that doesn’t make people who are “pro-life” and pro-death-penalty hypocrites, it just makes “pro-life” a weasely term
(2) Whatever weaseleyness there is in it is due to whoever weasellishly popularized it whenever it was popularized. Nowadays, it’s fait accompli. Similarly, it makes very little sense that our “Democratic” and “Republican” parties do not, as far as I know, have platforms that argue for the US being a pure democracy vs. a republic, but those are just the names they have.

Wait 'till I confess that I had my meme de-claused.

I hate the use of initials like CGI without explaining what the hell it is to the uninitiated. Otherwise we don’t know what we are sneering at. I assume its Computer Graphics something-or-other but without the “other” the post has little meaning.

The first time you use OISTABTI (Obscure Initial String To All But The Insiders), define it for us boobs.

“Fuckwit”. It was funny the first time I saw it. Then it got overused and tired, and now when I see it I find it embarrassingly hackneyed.

Although it appears that Oakminster left, so I don’t see it nearly as much these days. He was like the guy that tells you the same unfunny joke every single time you see him, like you’ve never heard it before, and he busts a gut over it each and every time. And you’ve known him like 20 years.

You just don’t know how to cook them.
