More SDMB memes you're sick of
I hate the use of initials like CGI without explaining what the hell it is to the uninitiated. Otherwise we don’t know what we are sneering at. I assume its Computer Graphics something-or-other but without the “other” the post has little meaning.

The first time you use OISTABTI (Obscure Initial String To All But The Insiders), define it for us boobs.

Really? Obscure? No offense, but It’s hard for us to know what’s obscure (to you) and what isn’t. You don’t ask us to define obscure words, you just go ahead and look them up.

Problem solved.

Isn’t Meme that dame that dies in Lobbo Wem?
No, no, no. Meme coaxes the blues right out of the horn and takes the shuck right off of the corn.

This really isn’t the place for a debate, but I was always taught that it is up to the writer to make his meaning clear.

Did I learn wrong?

Republicans are bad, Democrats are good. Actually, both are pretty bad and we should be embarassed by our democracy. I’m quite liberal and the only person around I see saying things I like is Kucinich…and we know how the MSM treats him. We’re fucked.

As an example of the above I see around here, Bush’s foreign policy is evil and Clinton’s was much better, right? Well, no. We could debate the seriousness and the intent of either (e.g. Bush using the military vs. Clinton using the U.N.) but objectively Clinton ended up killing a fuck load more people (granted, Bush may overcome him someday, but not yet). They’re both immoral asshats in my view.

I think maybe I should stop waiting til they’re all squishy.

You know who hated memes. Hitler, that’s who. Think about it, you anti-memetic bastards.
“Fuckwit”. It was funny the first time I saw it. Then it got overused and tired, and now when I see it I find it embarrassingly hackneyed.
I don’t know why this suddenly reared its head on the SDMB, but “fuckwit” has been a well established phrase in Britain for decades. Unhand our insult, my good man, or I’ll lay an OISTABTI on you.

No, that was the Patrician, and it was mImes not mEmes. :stuck_out_tongue:

I don’t think it’s unreasonable to expect people to know what “CGI” means. It’s a very commonplace term, and is used without further elaboration in major newspapers across the nation almost every day. A writer should strive to make himself understandable to his audience in aggregate, but that’s not the same as expecting him to make himself perfectly understandable to each and every member of the audience individually.

Common Gateway Interface, yeah?

I hate it when mimes phone me up.

**I KNOW YOU’RE THERE, YOU BASTARDS!

I KNOW WHO YOU ARE!**

I believe the usually accepted practice is not to define words that can be found in a standard dictionary. However, terms of art, specialized vocabularies (such as medical or scientific), acronyms and the like should be defined when first used. CGI isn’t in any dictionary that I have. The fact that newspapers use it, and I haven’t seen it but I don’t read much news about movies, is irrelevant. Newspapers departed from good writing years ago.

I burning your meme like a mother fuck. For about twenty minutes.

Won’t someone think of the memes?

Come on, you knew someone was going to do it.

Oooh. Political memes I hate:

 • If [Clinton|Bush] is bad, then [Bush|Clinton] is good. Nope. It’s possible to dislike and disrespect both. It may, in some twisted way, even be possible to respect or like both.

 • If you disagree with some one particular position that the Democrats or Republicans hold dear, then you’re obviously a card-carrying, dues-paying, member of the other party. (I disagree with a number of positions of both parties)

 • Liberal = Democrat (nope)

 • Republican = Pro-war (nope)

 • Democrat = Anti-military (nope)

And don’t even get me started on this ridiculous red state/blue state BS…
I’m pretty sick of seeing people use variations of their own names to refer to family members.

“So today I was playing with Merkboy when his sister Merksis comes in and…”
I’m sure it was cute to some people at some point in time, but I know I can’t be the only one sick and tired of this, right? To me it’s annoying and not clever.
Yeah, I find this overly cutesy and very irritating.

“I see a few (insert name of any group of people) are on the news because they’re idiots. I therefore hate all (insert name of same group of people) because all of them must be idiots because all people of a group are always identical”.

The stupid burns. Bad.

Actually, this is not even close to a SDMB meme. Any poster that does this will likely immediately get jumped on for making gross generalizations.

eta, I don’t think this happens very often, at least in the Pit. Most Pit regulars know it will be a smackdown. I can’t really consider it a meme, as opposed to stuff like twenty minutes or gotcha ya. YMMV.
