So I just searched for some old posts of mine, because I was trying to remember something, and the first search came up with 750 hits, the second one with 639 – I don’t know my exact post count off hand, but it’s over 1000 for sure. I did the first search via my profile and the link ‘find all posts by’, and the second via advanced search – username search. Repeating this (yes, that means I’ve just wasted more than 20 minutes on this ), I get the same figures, however I find that the profile search simply truncates the results that are shown at some point, so it appears there that all posts before a certain date are missing, while the username advanced search correctly finds my first post, yet apparently not all of them.
So, what’s all this, then? Does it happen to anybody else?
See if there’s a time cutoff on either. I.e. I looked at Advanced search and there are some dropdowns on the lower left. It may only be searching for the past year, that sort of thing.
There is a limit of 750 results on any search. You can partially get around this by doing two searches and reversing their chronology, so you will come up with the 750 oldest results on one and the 750 newest on the other. If you’re lucky, the search results will overlap, and you’ll find everything. Also, you can seach 1 forum at a time, and possibly get as many as 1500 results from each forum.
Ah thanks, that sheds some light on the whole thing. It still doesn’t explain how I get the result of 639 (now 641) via advanced search that apparently span my whole time posting here so far, though…
If you showed results as threads rather than posts, it would have shown all threads you posted to. Even if you made a dozen posts in one thread, it would only list the thread once and count as one result.
