Alright all you gay activists, it’s time to stop futzing around and get serious.
I want you all to go out there and start converting Mormons! I wanna see you knocking on doors in Utah with leaflets and offering to introduce them the “the gay lifestyle!”
Oh I dunno… I would have much less respect for the LDS church if they suddenly said it was ok to be gay. Not because I necessarily agree with the church on this issue, but because of consistancy. If you believe that church doctrine is directed by God through the prophet (which the mormans do) then it would be silly to think that God will change his/her/its mind because society or a faction of society feels that it should be a different way. Either God is or is not. To think that a church should change their position on an issue that is an anethema to them simply because there is a popular movement is ludicrous. So until the heirarchy of the church has some sort of epiphany about same sex marriage your stuck with them as an enemy. So, I applaud them for sticking to their guns, although I don’t agree with them on this particular issue.
Well, yes and no. The Utah church believes in ongoing revelation through the President of the Quorum of Twelve.
In 1890, the US Congress offered statehood to Utah on condition that the LDS abandoned polygamy. President Woodruff had a revelation from God that polygamy should be
forbidden by the church, even though Joseph Smith taught that it was a divine and unchanging ordinance.
In 1978, President Kimball had a divine revelation that black male Mormons could attain the Aaronic and Melchizidek
priesthoods. Coincidentally, the LDS church was expanding heavily in Brazil, a country with a large black population and had come under fire in the US for discrimination.
So God does work in strange and mysterious ways.
Honestly, it’s not at all surprising. Sad, but not surprising.
Here’s something funny - a link to their “ex-gay” “ministry” (yes, both of those need to be in separate quotes), but what’s the image on the home page? Two guys in a homoerotic intimate embrace! Dirty Birdy!

The level of pure ignorance in this thread is truly overwhelming. I would expect more from all of you, seeing as how this is the Straight Dope. But I guess that’s what I get for expecting too much.

quote - adam yax Anonomously, I’d
like to suggest “hanging all
the Mormons”.
I would much prefer we hang all jackasses who can’t tax their brains enough for an intelligent thought, and are subsequently reduced to mind-less “hate” drivel.
Spending time hating people who do not think or act as you do is such an incredible waste of time. I have gay aquaintances who know that I do not believe in same-sex relationships. I don’t spend any time bashing them, they don’t ask my opinions on things they know we don’t agree on. In the end I am responsible for me and you are responsible for you.
The LDS church will never endorse gay marraige because there is a fundamental disagreement between the doctrine of the church and that lifestyle. Likewise, they will never endorse women holding the priesthood for the same reason. There are many other “controversial” issues which do not necessarily come up directly in contrast to that doctrine, and so positions may be changed according to the counsels of the church leaders. If you use that as a stick to beat them with, you are no better than those you accuse. Deal with it and live your own life in the best way you can.
Oh, BTW,
Quote - I want you all to go out

It’s been done already – I know several former LDS members who left the church because they chose a homosexual lifestyle. We all have the right to make our own mistakes.
Did you even read the story that was linked in the OP dumbass? It is quite obvious that your feeble mind was incapable of clicking on the underlined blue link. If you had spent a minimal effort you would have seen the following
Now, in your two days here am I to assume that you have read enough of my posts to form a clear picture of who I am? If you knew me you would realize that what I said was said tongue in cheek, unlike the quote that I was refering to.
Satan, I would, but it wouldn’t matter. There are some things people refuse to understand. Not accept, just understand. I’ve tried to fight those people on this board before, and it was fighting a losing battle. It’s like trying to get a bunch of creationists to understand evolution. Not accept evolution, just understand the scientific principals behind it. It won’t happen.
So I give up. You can all wallow in your ignorance, like contented pigs in mud, because if I dare point it out, I will be seen as a gay-bashing, intolerant bitch.
So, whatever.
I fail to see what was incorrect or ignorant about what these other posters said, pepperlandgirl. Granted, I don’t know all that much about Mormonism, but I’d like to see the record set straight if it isn’t. What do you take issue with? Sounds to me like you’re dodging the question.
I believe that pepper is taking the ‘love the sinner, hate the sin’ stance, which many here in SDMB even find that to be offensive.
adam yax–‘Hanging all the Mormons’ and statements such as that are no longer taken as being funny, and rightly so, especially considering yesterday’s events.
Some people will never understand any attempt to justify racial, gender, ethnic or orientation intolerance, especialy those based on some religious or cultural doctrine that may be in dispute. These people will never understand the justification of relegating women in the congregation to the choir, instead of positions of higher leadership, despite the fact that women are generally more spiritual and more eager to take up religion. They will never understand why religious and political leaders say that gays do not deserve equal protection under God and under the law, although the ‘leaders’ nowadays are trying to distance themselves from those who would interpret their words to extreme ends. These are the things that many people, including myself, will refuse to understand. This is probably not what you were trying to say, pepper, but, in all due respect, this is what I believe, and this is why I am currently out of religion.
Adam Yax made that statement because of what the article said. I read the article and saw the comment. I could tell this without breaking a sweat. Whomever accused him of being an asshole is wrong - He was being ironic.
Pepperlandgirl, the purpose of this board is, as you said, to fight ignorance.
Ignorance in itself is not a bad thing. I am ignorant of a great many things. I strive to learn and eliminate my own ignorance on a ton of topics. It’s one of the great things about this place.
That said, if you see people who are ignorant and do nothing to rectify the situation, I think it is YOU who doesn’t get the purpose of this board.
And if you content yourself to just insult people and say “you’re wrong,” especially with the language that you use in describing some people, you not only miss the point, but fail to make any of your own.
In a nutshell: Either show people the errors of their way of don’t comment they’re wrong. Whether they get it or not is irrelevant. You said people are ignorant, and as such I would like to see exactly which comments are not indicative of the Mormon attitude towards homosexuals. I would expect you to point out the flaws and explain the truths.
If you cannot do this, it is a best a disingenuous contribution to ignorance (something this board is quite against), and at worst you lashing out at people who are saying nothing untruthful about your beliefs, but you just don’t want to face those truths.
