If you listen to the radio in the morning, do you prefer the stations where the DJs talk and try to be funny or DJs who are pleasant but mostly play music?
I’m not a morning person. I don’t want to hear anything from the DJ except the news, the weather and music. I don’t want to hear about last night’s American Idle (I would have watched if I wanted) and I don’t want to hear them try to make small talk with some moron who dialed in to tell us about his weekend bar-b-que. If I wanted talk radio I would put on NPR. Just play the music already.
I’m the opposite. I thoroughly enjoyed my morning radio show in my old city. Unfortunately my new city doesn’t have anything nearly as good so I’ve taken to listening to NPR instead. Probably better for my brain, but man do I miss a good laugh on the way to work.
Music. I can’t stand listening to DJs talk in the morning. If I wanted to listen to talk, I’d put it on the all-sports or all-news channels. At least they would give me what I need and aren’t trying (and failing) to be funny. Just play the songs.
I’m with the OP- Shut the fuck up, put down the mic, and play the music. I don’t want to hear your “amusing” banter, your commentary on current events or TV, or anything at all except the title and artist of the song you’re playing, and the news on the hour.
Unfortunately, every radio station within 100kms of here (at least as far as I can pick up, anyway) has either the “Morning Zoo” or “Wacky Hosts” breakfast format, which irritates me no end.
I can’t stand those “morning zoo” programs with 2 or 3 yuk monkies and their non-stop giggling, cackling and vapid yapping about meaningless BS.
Here in Atlanta there is a great college radio station, WRAS, that plays music of all genres, and except for a PSA now and then it is commercial-free. It’s the only station I listen to in my car or at home except for the classical music station now and then.
I hate all morning DJs. Shut the hell up and play music, you slackwits. But at least with bozos like “Bob and Tom”, I know that they’re going to be flapping their gums from 6 till 10 or whatever, and I can avoid the stations they pollute. What I really hate are the DJs who are supposed to be playing music but talk over the songs. They should all be killed. I heard one jackass talking over the intro to “Baker Street”, for god’s sake. Baker Street! He killed the famous sax intro! Idiot!!!
OK, now that that’s off my chest. ::breathe:: I mostly listen to NPR, but sometimes I need a break from the news. Then, I turn to a music station, get pissed off, and turn back to NPR.
I stopped listening to the radio in 1995 when the commercials started outnumbering everything else. On a typical morning show nowadays, how much time do the ads take up? 2/3rds of the hour? With the DJs’ yammering, that would leave room for maybe 1 or 2 songs per hour.
And I’d go for the music every time, unless I was in the mood for Howard Stern.
I hate morning DJs, with their forced laughter, stupid anecdotes, idiot callers, yuk monkeying, and inability to shut the fuck up and play the goddamn music!
I had one radio station which apparently did a morning show. It must have been really funny, because every time I scanned past it, all we heard was a bunch of laughing hyenas. Never the joke. We’d wait awhile…“hahahahahahahahahaha…oh, oh…hahahahahahaha…” Fuck it.
Even on stations where you *do * hear the “jokes”, they aren’t funny.
My morning guy on WXRT Chicago…he talks a bit, but it’s relaxed and amusing as opposed to “Morning Zoo” style, which I can’t stand. The music is the priority, but there is some talk and I’m ok with it. If he didn’t do it, I wouldn’t miss it, but I’m not thoroughly annoyed like I get with other DJs.
I hate the morning zoo shows. The morning banter at my work already consists of a bunch of giggling idiots repeating the jokes from last night’s episode of whatever lowest-common-denominator sitcom is popular these days. I don’t need to hear it on the radio too.
I won’t complain about morning talk shows since I do like listening to some of the good ones.
But make a decision if you either want to play music or you want to be a talk show! Don’t try to do both.
I like the KQRS morning show in Minneapolis but it’s a classic rock station which I hate. So when I tune in in the morning to hear some witty banter I often get hit with some moldy classic “Aw fuck, Steely Dan again!”
Even worse is the KFAN station here that is supposed to be sports talk radio. You’d think they’d have enough sports to talk about here with the Twins, Timberwolves, Vikings, Wild, Gophers. But half the time I tune in they’re rambling on about some non-sports related topic. Stick to sports you morons!
