I was just curious what morning drive-time radio shows everyone listens to in their various locales. I commute through Orlando and Kissimmee, Florida, so I listen to the Monsters In the Morning on 104.1 FM. I know the Monsters are syndicated, but I’m not sure how far and wide they are broadcast. There are six main on-air personalities: Russ, Dirty Jim, Bubba (sounds like Brak from Space Ghost but with a heavy Southern accent), Savannah (ditzy ex-stripper), Daniel, and Black Bean. I find them much funnier than your stereotypical “Morning Zoo” radio shows, and you can tell they are all good friends and they have a good time with each other every morning. I don’t feel that sense of humor or camaraderie from Howard Stern anymore, even though I sometimes flip to him when the Monsters cut to commercials. My father used to be a huge Stern fan, but I could only ever take him in small doses. Do Dopers tune into the wacky “Morning Zoo” DJs, or do you turn to NPR, or political talk radio, or what? Who do you like best as you’re going to work?
Every week day, the morning commute isn’t complete without Mark & Brian, KLOS 95.5 Los Angeles. I usually am on the road in time to hear “We’ve Got Your Answer Hanging,” which means I can play along with the bozos that call!
When I get in the car, I turn on sports talk radio WFAN. If they’re talking football, terrific. If they’re talking anything else, then it’s over to Stern I go.
I listened to the Monsters when I lived in Orlando and Daytona from 95’ to 01’.
When I moved to the southern west coast of Florida from 01’ to 02’ (Ft. Myers) I thought I had lost them till about a month later when the local station picked them up.
I thought I had lost them again when I transferred to Minneapolis in 01’ till they popped up on my XM radio. So I still listen to these guys from over 1000 miles away.
I hate the local cookie cutter morning crews around town.
“Did you listen to Van and Cheryl this morning?”
“No, I didn’t listen to Dan and Carol.”
“It’s Van and Cheryl .”
“Yeah, same difference.”
I used to listen to them when they were doing the afternoon show, but only when a big important event took place: I knew they’d have a novel and interesting take on it, otherwise it was just the same old same old.
And I would agree that they are a bit better than Morning Zoo type hosts, but I HATE HATE HATE those hosts, so having one degree lesser of hate isn’t a big improvement.
I don’t listen to 104.1 except when they’re playing music, but even that has started to stagnate as of late. The talk shows got old after a couple years.
I have come to realize that I hate virtually ALL radio DJs, especially morning crews. So many of them talk about things I care nothing about.
As a result, I rarely listen to morning radio, and listen to newsradio (NPR) instead. However, every once in awhile I’ll tune in to Dave, Shelly and Chainsaw on 101.5 KGB. They tend to be more sarcastic, which is my speed, rather than hyuk-hyuk funny or super cheerful. They do pretty good imitations of each other, which make me laugh.
I absolutely hate morning radio. What I actually do is tape the late night call-in show Loveline with Adam Carolla and Dr. Drew overnight and listen to it in the morning instead. Carolla is a comic genius and Dr. Drew is a real medical doctor, and the two work well off of each other. Otherwise, I’ll usually just leave the radio off.
When I do listen to morning radio, it’s usually Curtis & Kuby on WABC. They temper each other’s extremes well but either one alone isn’t nearly as good as they are together. WABC really had a revolving door there for a while. I thought Lionel in the morning was good.
Talk shows on the radio make me want to shoot someone. Morning radio talk shows make me want to go on a killing spree at the radio station from which they’re broadcasting.
I subscribe to XM satellite radio. It’s safer for all parties involved.
Wacky morning deejays suck. I would rather – and in fact, I have – listened to mariachi music on 99.1 (the former WHFS) instead of putting up with
JIM AND KAZOO
STEVE AND THE KREW
BOB AND FLOUNDER
TIM AND THE MAN-WANG
…or any other “morning zoo” bullshit. When I want the news, I tune to Morning Edition. If I want tunes, I’m out of luck on the morning drive unless I want country or mariachi music. TRUE FACT: I listened to an entire block of commercials in Spanish rather than switch over to a Morning Zoo station. I now know that there is a Toyota dealer named Juan over at College Park who speaks Spanish and is eager to help me buy a Scion.
UrbanChic, anytime you want to climb a tower during drive-time, call me up.
I listen to NPR. Morning drive-time shows annoy me. Once in a while, though, I’ll tune in to the pop-music station; my former professor is one of the hosts.
When I lived in Minnesota, though, I really liked Tom Bernard on KQRS. I’d love to find something similar here, but more and more stations are going with nationally-syndicated programming.
Bob & Tom is my choice in the morning if I’m listening. The Monsters were on middays in my area (South Florida) for a couple years bumping The Love Doctors, who are the better show, to 3pm. Now the Monsters are gone and the Docs are back to middays.
Howard all the way. He’s been better and worse, but he’s a New Yorker through and through. He’s lost some of that childlike innocence he used to have in the 90s, though. Now he’s just kinda angry.
I’ve compeltely given up on radio and part of the reason why is because the only morning show I ever liked got taken off.
It was called Johnny in the morning and the humor was natural. Either they never had planned jokes or they were so good at delivery that it never seemed that way.
Never found a reason to listen to radio after that was taken off.
I have XM, so I’ll typically listen to Opie & Anthony, although recently I’ve been flipping over to Baseball This Morning with Mark Patrick and Larry Bowa.
If I’m listening to terrestrial radio for some reason, it’s Twitch, Mary Jane and Kyle the Intern on ZRock 103.
Interestingly, both O&A and Twitch have links on the front page of FARK.
