morning sickness

Can those of you who have had it, describe it. Is it waves of nausea or a general continuous feeling of nausea? or both - does it depend on the individual?

I had terrible morning sickness for two of my pregnancies and just horrible sickness for my third. It was this general feeling of nausea that would arrive when I woke up and stay with me all day. Punctuated by actual vomiting at odd hours. I tended to vomit more in the morning, but the sick feeling lasted all the the time. It got much worse if I were tired or had been standing up too long. What was weird was that in each pregnancy a different food would improve it. With child number one - Coke and stuffing helped a great deal. With child number two it was 7-up and cookies. Child three was Taco Bell Mexican Pizzas. I’d lie on the couch until 10:00 when the local Taco Bell opened up and I could get one.

The nausea is central - which means it starts in the brain, not the stomach. Very much like motion sickness. I tried all the tricks - the bands, etc. etc. and not much helped. By weeks 16-20 of the pregancy it went away.

My doctor for number 2, who was extremely knife and pill happy, told me that the prescription drug for morning sickness which was pulled off the market because it led to birth defects is available over the counter in Unisom and she urged me to take it. I merely switched health care providers.

My morning sickness wasn’t as bad as Capri’s. I’d describe it more as waves of nausea. I would generally wake up feeling a bit queasy and the feeling would return at various points during the day, usually when I needed something to eat. I found that drinking cold water helped. Apples were also something that seemed to calm it. I never actually vomited from morning sickness with either of my pregnancies.

When I was pregnant, I generally didn’t feel sick, but there were occasions when I’d feel queasy at the thought of eating or by certain smells. Also, there were occasional out of the blue bouts wherein I felt fine one moment, and was immediately and uncontrollably ill the next with no warning whatsoever. I think it varies quite a bit on each individual basis.

thank you for that - also, how much past conception do you think it started. Doctors say mostly from week 5 - 20, but for some women it can start straight after conception!

Mine started at about 5 weeks. I noticed other pregnancy symptoms (sore boobs, fatigue, needing to pee a lot) before that.

With mine there was no nausea at all. Just bopping along and all of a sudden the “ohnoivegottagettoabathroomNOW” feeling and whammo. Started at 14 weeks, lasted till the 16th when a smart doctor intervened.

For morning nausea, I suggest a warm cup of mint tea. During the day, it helps to suck on a mint candy.
