Most Attractive Hobbies?

What? Like baby seals?

Not hot.

Who doesn’t?

Kitemaking and flying the kites you made with your own hands (on your sewing machine) is a very nice hobby! There are some beautiful handmade kites flying today!

Grilled, fried, or tartare aller-retour?

As a longtime Doper, I do not understand these people who object to hobbies like “debating” and “arguing online”.

Admittedly, their attractiveness is strongly dependent on what you’re arguing for and how well you do it.

Maybe if you’re all the time arguing online, you won’t get to spend much time with your partner.

Ask my husband!

Sometimes my debrief at the end of the day is, “Let me tell you about all the people who were wrong on the Internet today.'"

Remember, this survey went out to general, average people. And general, average people tend to be morons.

If arguing on the internet is wrong, I don’t wanna be right!

But if I didn’t care about being right, then I wouldn’t want to…um, this is tricky.

I’m surprised Exercise/Gym wasn’t higher in the list.

You mean higher on the “attractive” list or the “not attractive” list?

I can maybe see it following a curve, where e.g. “fit” is more attractive than “obese”, but somewhere between “obsessive gym rat” and “veiny muscle monster” is no longer attractive.

Higher on the attractive list. Maybe a better word would have been “fitness.”

So many of the most and least attractive ones make lots of sense to me as something to look for in a partner. Reading, woodworking, painting, writing, gardening, archery, and blacksmithing are all hobbies where the hobbyist will go off alone for awhile, and leave their partner alone.

Conversely comic books, cosplay, debating, anime, crypto (especially crypto), cigars, arguing online, and manosphere seem like hobbies where every conversation with the hobbyist quickly devolves to, “let me talk at you about crypto” (or whichever). I guess veganism doesn’t count as a hobby.

Congratulations to video games for moving up in the world enough to dodge the unattractive hobby list.

I bet it was Stardew Valley.

For a while there during the pandemic, it was very much “let me talk at you about crypto Stardew Valley Animal Crossing”…

Oh yes, yes yes. I used to fly.

Kite flying sort of lets you go. I does take skill, but not very much. You must pay attention though. It’s a good way to ‘get out of your head’

For the life of me I’ll never understand box kites though.

Collecting rare Chinese pottery and sports cars, along with visiting exotic places and dining at top-rated Michelin restaurants would probably appeal to most women.*

Not that I do any of those things.

“Wanna see my fig tree collection?”

*having lots of money is generally attractive.

I had a hobby years ago that seemed to attract both women and men. I twisted fine copper wire into little bonsai trees and then gave them away. I would sit down at the coffee shop and start twisting my wire , and in no time someone would join me.

That’s probably as good an attention getter as walking a Golden Retriever or German Shepherd puppy!

That may not be quite accurate. By definition, half of them are above average and half below.

And the word used to be a ‘professional’ medical term, which is not used these days:
