Would it be possible for the mods to proactively block any post that has a “Live Streaming” link?
We wish them away to the cornfield as soon as we see them.
We have an automatic spam filter that catches posts like this. We also ban troublesome IP ranges. To get around things like this, the spammers use hosting sites all over the world to spoof their IP addresses and they make posts that don’t contain links and then edit the links in to get past the spam filters.
The live stream crap pretty much all comes from one small group in Bangladesh. If we could find some way of disconnecting Bangladesh from the rest of the internet, all of this would stop. Otherwise, these guys try every trick in the book to get past spam filters. They put more work into their spam than many people put into their day jobs.
Technically, sure. Right now, it might take a board hack, which won’t happen. It’s entirely possible there will be a provision to handle this in a vBulletin upgrade, but it’s a can-n-mouse, cops-n-robbers game. The spammers will soon come up with some clever workaround.
As long as running coach is around, they won’t get too far.
Really? Then why does so little happen until someone reports it? I must have reported a dozen spam posts already this year and I’m not the only one.
Would you like to see what happens if they turn the filter off?
And did you use the wrong timeframe there? It’s September - a dozen posts this year is just a bit more than one a month.
Much ado about nothing
But what if someone legitimately wants to post a video like this?
Like I’ve said, they’ve figured out how to get around the spam filters (not just here, but on numerous forums).
Whenever I have time, I personally look at every new member that signs up. I catch many spammers that way (and even catch a few before they post). I don’t have time to sit at the PC all day long and catch every single spammer as they sign up. We do what we can.
Post reports are very helpful, and we do very much appreciate them. But, believe it or not, we don’t just sit around on our backsides and wait for post reports to come in.
No, but I am curious as to how many are spotted by the filter before a poster reports.
I’m not a professional, salaried, spammer spotter. If I report one, it’s because I accidentally ran across one. How many do you find in 9 months? I’m not running a spammer soaker script to satisfy my insatiable desire for revenges.
The filter doesn’t report. The filter hides the post until we review it. Then we can either approve or delete it.
The Bangladesh crowd has mostly learned to evade the filter, but it caught one of them today. It also caught two other posts this morning. So that’s three spams today that were never seen by any SDMB users due to the spam filter.
