I must say from the outset that I have never tasted a Doctor Pepper.
Thank you.
I disagree with the OP, and also with the thread title.
How can someone never have tasted Dr. Pepper? I don’t like it and wouldn’t care if they tasted the same, but never tasted it? Or are you from another country?
I don’t understand how people can think they taste the same.
To me everything(including Diet Dr Pepper) sweetened with Aspartame has a very distinct taste. I don’t like it. Nothing diet with Aspartame in it tastes anything like the non-diet version.
Dr. Pepper is not the stuff of Great Debates. I’m doing you a favor by moving this to IMHO. Trust me.
I changed the thread title too. Please try to choose more descriptive titles in the future.

In the spirit of all the platform hijackers being discussed in this thread, I would have to say that it really doesn’t matter if they taste the same because Mr. Pibb is so much better!
No they do not and Diet Dr Pepper is not sweetened with Aspartame if IIRC. It has something different in it.
You might as well be drinking dishwater until you drink the REAL Dr. Pepper, only available here in Texas, made with real cain (sp?) sugar. Even the label is different.
I hate to argue with the incomparable Arden Ranger, but Diet Dr Pepper is sweetened with Aspartame.

I checked the Dr Pepper website to make sure. But I knew that I tasted Aspartame.
Damn. I could swear it says something different on the side of the can. But as I don’t have one here at the moment, I can’t check.
It’s that big word that starts with a Phen…something. I remember there being a big bruhaha over it when they first started adding it because it doesn’t necessarily play nice with people with certain medical conditions.
Ah well, live and learn. Yes?
I don’t think they taste the same. The diet Dr. Pepper leaves an unpleasant aftertaste.
A true connoisseur knows that the only DP worth drinking is that available from the Dr Pepper plant in Dublin, TX. They use only cane sugar as a sweetener instead of corn syrup.
That diet stuff will stunt your growth.
Dr Pepper is icky. I have cough syrup that tasted better.
Yeah, but Dr. Skipper is the best of all. It tastes exactly like Pepper (the cans are even the same), but for some reason, Skipper is… addictive. I think they put heroin and nicotine in it.
But, for a TRUE “platform hijack”, I must mention that Josta was the greatest of all. May it rest in peace.
No way on earth does regular Dr. Pepper taste like Diet, nor does it taste like Dr. Skipper (which has more of a Black Cherry tinge about it). Been too long since I had a Pibb, but I remember comparing the ingredients w/that of Pepper, and they were exactly the same, even in the sequence, except for the very last one. Hmmm…
Although Dr Pepper has been proven to be the most horrid soft drink around (Wilkins, 1986 and Murphy, 1991) my wife loves it. I can’t figure that out. No amount of reasoning or evidence will show her how foul that stuff is.
The word you’re looking for is phenylalanine.
Aspartame (a.k.a Nutrasweet) contains phenylalanine,
which has to be avoided by people with phenylketonuria.
(or phenylalanine is one of the byproducts of aspartame metabolism - don’t remember which)
Phenylketonuria is a hereditary disorder in which you improperly metabolize phenylalanine.
If phenylketonurics consume phenylalanine it will lead to mental retardation due to the buildup in the brain of the toxic metabolic products.
Hence the warning that products containing Aspartame must carry.
I’m sorry but I must strongly disagree… look at the responses in a meer one days time… but this is good enough for my post… I think I’ll beat myself at pointless poll again!
ANYWAY
The reason why me and my cousin drink Dr (again notice taht ther is NO ‘.’) Pepper is because of all the Name brand Soft drinks, it has the MOST caffein… So it is ideal for late night deathmatch/James Bond parties
And another thing to add to relate it… Mt. Dew (Notice ther IS a ‘.’) has the most sugar of all name brand soft drinks… So if you’re looking for sugar in Mt. Dew you don’t care about Caffein, and conversly if you’re looking for caffein in Dr Pepper ou care less about sugar…
So my conclusion is that Diet DP and Normal DP do not taste the same… but when you’re jacked up on caffein… WHO CARES! (And if you’re drinking DP for sugar not caffein, ya’ll crazy because you should switch to kool-aid!)
I didn’t think anyone still used cane sugar in soda! All the bottlers in the Chicagoland area use (ugh!) corn syrup in our pop. It gives the soda a noticably “thicker” consistency. That was the travesty of the “New” Coke debacle. It was really just a ruse to get us to ignore the fact that bottlers were switching to corn syrup in droves because it was so much cheaper. Is it still possible to purchase a Coke made with “real” cane sugar in the United States? (I know the answer has something to do with Passover)
