Most Overrated Actors

I am suprised to see that many of you think that Nicholson, DeNiro, Streep, and others are overrated. They might not be doing there best work at the moment, but I don’t think they are overrated. They have all proven themselves time and time again.

I think that Nicholas Cage is overrated. Julia Roberts is by far the most overrated.

What do you all think about Val Kilmer?

Dustin Hoffman
Jack Nicholson -
Both way, way overrated.

Tom Cruise
Brad Pitt -
Who decided these blokes were good looking, or could act? Not this woman, that’s for sure

Whoppie Goldberg

Whoppie Goldberg and al pacino, his earlier stuff was good but lately hes been doing crap, and i dont see why he got the oscar for Scent of a Woman and not Dog Day Afternoon

I overrated Keanu Reeves. He did such a good job in River’s Edge that with every subsequent role I thought he was being typecast. It took a while for it to sink in that the role he played in River’s Edge was the entire extent of his acting ability.

I’ll go crawl into my hole of shame now.

Jessica Lange.

I just watched “The Music Box” and noticed that she smiled inappropriately exactly 692 times throughout the movie. If she wants to sell rage, she smiles. Fear? Smile. Disgust? Smile. Surprise? Determination? Well, you get the idea.

I haven’t seen her in anything else I can remember except “Tootsie.” If the smiling thing is just a one movie aberration then maybe she doesn’t belong on the list. If not, she definitely does.

OK. I’ll bite.

I think Val Kilmer is one of the most underrated actors around. He stole the show in Tombstone, and was a one-man show in The Doors and more recently in The Salton Sea. His performances over the last the twenty years have run the gamut from Top Secret!, to Pollock.

[sub][sup]And don’t forget Real Genius. [/sup][/sub]

“I’m your huckleberry”…w/ exception to his role as Billy the Kid, he’s impressed me with most of his work.

now Pierce Brosnan, WTF happened with him? I thought he had something at one time but I swear…he’s just boring. :frowning:

OK, I’m exhausted and have to get to sleep, but I just couldn’t possibly do that without at least agreeing with you here. I just can’t possibly imagine that there are so many people who find these actors (and some others mentioned in this thread) overrated.

First off, Meryl Streep is so frickin’ brilliant in so many things that I’m wondering if we’re all talking about the same person. I had my jaw dropped the entire way through Sophie’s Choice just watching the subtley of the real life she brought to that character. No, not just talking accents here, (no small feat regardless), but moment to moment emotion. Then to see her in Ironweed, a completely different character in every way and one of the most believable performances I’ve ever seen.

OK, I’m way too tired to comment on the others. I’ll just say to you CURIOUS_GEORGIE7, no you are not alone. I truly and honestly do not get Brad Pitt either. I’ve tried, oh how I’ve tried. I’ve mentioned it to others, others who are actors or at least whose opinion I respect for one reason or another, and they all agree that he is indeed quite talented. So I watch again to see it, and I just don’t get it. I see nothing in him at all.

g’nite

Add Anthony Hopkins to the list. Sometimes the parts he plays require no emotion, like Lecter or Nixon. He was quite good in movies like The Bounty and The Elephant Man.

I think Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez are really overrated.

At the risk of a huge flaming I think Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise have shown some good stuff.

Tom Cruise in Born on the Fourth of July and Legend

Brad Pitt in both Legends of the Fall and Kalifornia

oops - earlier I forgot to mention John Travolta. His “characters” always seem the same to me

Al Pacino drives me batshit. He just yells. Channeling rage into a character no matter whether it’s appropriate is not acting!

Also Natalie Portman cannot act her way out of a paper bag.

He was good in The Godfather and The Godfather Part II but I agree with you. It’s like every part he plays now is an over-blown parody of Michael Corelone.
