This is a song I wrote about a waitress. She works in an oyster bar where I play regularly. I was down there on a short term assignment for my day job and booked a few gigs while I was in town. We hit it off, had a great time hitting the bars, dancing and watching the sunrise over the meaning of life. I usually don’t travel that far to play but now I have other motives that keep me coming back. Unfortunately for me she is a lesbian.
Street lamps fell like fireflies
traded day for night
my motor was the southern sky
beneath a dashboard light
I thought, one hundred years from now
no one will ever know
doesn’t matter anyhow
one hundred years ago
So here I go
and there I went
on down the road
oh the time that I have spent
the sun comes in the stars go out
it’s happened once again
close my eyes just say good bye
three hundred miles from Jen
I made a call to yesterday
or did I only dream
my how the time has blown away
but years and days are free
Up all night we’ll sleep all day
dear God don’t let this end
tomorrow I’m back down the road
three hundred miles from Jen
So here I go
and there I went
on down the road
oh the time that I have spent
the sun comes in the stars go out
it’s happened once again
close my eyes just say good bye
three hundred miles from Jen
Another town another day
another world away
another girl you’ll find her soon
I know I shouldn’t stay
But I see your smile in black and white
I want to hold you near
just watch the sunset fall asleep
as dust becomes a tear
yeah just watch the sunset fall asleep
as dust becomes a tear
So here I go
and there I went
on down the road
oh the time that I have spent
the sun comes in the stars go out
it’s happened once again
close my eyes just say good bye
three hundred miles from Jen
Just close my eyes and say good bye
three hundred miles from Jen
No I don’t want to say good bye
three hundred miles from Jen
Well that gets my vote. 'Course I could be a little biased.
“They Can’t Take That Away from Me” by George and Ira Gershwin. Has never been topped. Few have even come close.
Other candidates:
“Someone to Watch Over Me” – The Gershwins again.
“I Get a Kick Out of You” by Cole Porter
“I Only Have Eyes for You” by Harry Warren and Al Dubin (though only if played correctly – the version in Dames is great, but too many versions are played too slowly).
“Till There Was You” by Meredith Willson (good enough for the Beatles, who recorded it).
Anybody know the name of that song Sting did on SNL (when he was the host, not the musical guest)? Maybe called something like ‘The Very Thought of You’
I missed Valentine’s Day, but my favorite song ever (which happens to fit the category) is “Beyond The Sea,” recorded by Bobby Darin. (Or Royal Crown Revue, take your pick).
It would deffinitely have to be Pink Floyd’s “Several species of small fury animals gathered together in a cave and grooving with a pick” off the album “Pink Floyd Works”.
But it’s only romantic if you’re just a little messed up on one hit of acid, a few hot knives, couple puffs of weed, several Canadian beers and you’re with your best friends sisters second cousin underneath the cottage laying accross 4x4 tires.
Well, just try it and let me know how it works for you.
The tune you’re referencing is “My One and Only Love” And if you think Sting’s version is excellent, then you would absolutely love Johnny Hartman’s rendition on “Johnny Hartman and John Coltrane”…you’ll love all the other tunes as well, I suspect. Pretty much everything on that record gets my vote for most romantic…but I’m a guy so I don’t know nuthin’ bout this
Tupelo Honey- Van Morrison
Stars Fell on Alabama- I’ve only heard Jimmy Buffet sing it…but it’s wonderful
My Romance- Rodgers and Hart…sung by anyone
More Than You Know- sung by Dr. John
Fly Me To The Moon- sung by Frank Sinatra
