<tangent> Have you ever read The Handmaiden’s Tale? I only know the bible story your referencing from the sanitized kids’ version of the story that didn’t include what you’ve described, but I now find it interesting that an important scene in a sci-fi story clearly was inspired by something out of the bible. </tangent>

The dystopian society in The Handmaiden’s Tale is run by religious fanatics. Many elements of their society, not just that one scene, are clearly inspired by the Bible.

Unless there’s two books with similar titles and premises, it’s The Handmaid’s Tale, not Handmaiden.

Also, the title of the book, and the calling them Handmaids, is a reference to the Abraham/Sarah/Hagar thing. (As well as a similar event in a different book.)
