What’s the most worthwhile distributed computing project, in your opinion? I recently realized that I have a lot of spare computing time I could donate, but there are so many different projects to choose from. Which one should I contribute to?
Of and on throughout the years, I’ve participated in SETI which I believe was the first distributed computing project. For what it’s worth, it is the one I like. It’s not curing cancer, but who knows what it could find.
I’d love to find out we aren’t the only ones. I have always appreciated the concept of life and it’s uniqueness in the world and the longer it takes us to find others, the more special it makes it seem, to me at least.
I dunno, maybe we could live in a world where life has real value. Where people appreciate what a gift it is instead of looking for whatever may or may not come after.
project gutenberg is pretty cool
I believe the OP is talking about SETI@home-type projects. The ones that install a screen save that runs an algorithm while your computer is idle.
Wikipedia says “Distributed computing is a method of computer processing in which different parts of a program run simultaneously on two or more computers that are communicating with each other over a network.” Arguably, all the automated and facilitated trading of stocks, futures, and other investments is such a method, helping allocate resources throughout our civilization. I doubt this is what the OP meant, but is it actually the true answer?
Bump. I don’t think it counts as a zombie, considering it got next to no responses.
I prefer to help on Protien Folding because most people could benefit from this work before they die. That meaning you will experience some health issues this could possibly help[ with.
I’m pretty sure the game company I work for could never get a damn thing done without Incredibuild, although I suppose that’s not what you have in mind…
Try looking at BOINC to see if any projects there are interesting for you. You can run one or many.
I run two instances of Folding@Home on my desktop, one for each processor core. Recently I’ve been wondering whether humanity is better served by me turning my computer off at night, or leaving it on and running F@H…
