Mother's Day!

So as a divorcée since my son was 9 and really even before that, my son has never been one to acknowledge Mother’s Day very much. Before that his dad didn’t do a great job making sure the day was special, and since then we were on our own. Then I got remarried almost 2 years ago and last year not much happened. This year, however, my husband had a talk with Dominic and this morning I was surprised to be woken up (at 11am–he let me sleep in) with the words “breakfast in bed!”

Dan was (and still is) at the hospital seeing patients, so this was something Dominic did by himself. I got scrambled eggs, veggie “bacon”, English muffin, and a latte. It was all very good. Then I got a hand-made card. Then about half an hour ago I got a rum & coke. Ha! So far it’s shaping up to be a good Mother’s Day. And I’d had very little hope that it would even be acknowledged.

So all you other moms–how’s your day going? What have your kids done for you?

ETA: my son is 15 now, if that matters. And for all you old AOL folks yes, that means Nicky Boober is now within a stone’s throw of being old enough to drive!

Happy mother’s day! I’m glad yours is going better than mine, so far. Being a Sunday and husband is home, and it’s a beautiful day, we cut down some dead shrubs and bagged 'em up. Then I did laundry and cooked ahead for the week. Another ho-hum Sunday… If I don’t get some acknowledgement by 9 p.m. tonight from MY offspring, you all can look for a tearful bitter rant from me tomorrow in The Pit. :frowning: (…leaving to fix myself a rum and coke ).

I got a call from my 15 year old, who’s away at boarding school, assuring me that I had a card in the mail. It was sweet. He’s a good kid.

I got a card from my SO in the mail Saturday, and a call from my son this morning at nine am and one from my daughter about ten minutes later. The fact that my kids were awake and being productive that early on a Sunday just made me so proud! Took myself and my mom to church…(I snuck flowers and cards into the house for her after she went to bed last night) and then went off to work where I made sure OTHER moms had a happy day. And now I’m home, and going to make myself a meal and a Tom Collins and get my feet up.

We just got back from taking SWMBO out for Mother’s Day. And as a surprise, I got StepDaughter in for a surprise visit from San Antonio. It totally made SWMBO’s evening.

Occasionally, I manage to score an attaboy instead of an awshit.

The day started out with breakfast in bed, courtesy of the Princess (with help from Grandma.) Unfortunately, no one knew the grape jelly* in the crepe I ate would trigger a migraine of epic proportions, which took up the rest of the morning. When I finally surfaced in the afternoon, I finished wrapping gifts and got ready to go to my sister’s place for dinner. We had Thai food and a lovely fruit tart for dessert, and opened gifts. My favorites were a handmade card from my daughter, and a store-bought card from my niece with a sweet handwritten message that made me cry - she gave the same thing to her other aunts. Sis swore that she didn’t know her daughter had gone out to buy cards with her own money, and did it out of her own initiative. I still want to cry a little just thinking about it. So, in spite of the migraine, and later the allergies when I came home to vacuum a rather dusty room, I’d say my Mother’s Day was OK.

*Apparently the migraine-causing chemicals in red wine are also present in Concord grape jelly. I found out the hard way.
