About four hours ago when I ran out of things that were wrong with Elton John.
I’m only joking.
However I will now stop, it’s starting to get a bit weird. Sorry, as you were. Must go as my daughter is claiming to be a little teapot and my duty is clear…
This may not change your thoughts about the movie, but I thought it was interesting. The reason the movie uses pop songs is that the movie’s writers had created an Orpheus-type character in Christian, but then felt overwhelmed trying to write poetry/lyrics for The World’s Most Powerful Poet[sup]TM[/sup]. So, the writers instead utilized pop culture–Top 40 songs.
I guess you could call that lazy, but I think it’s inventive.
Sorry, I couldn’t find a cite for this online; I heard it on one of the DVD’s bonus features. Which leads me to say: If you like this movie, you owe it to yourself to get the two-disc set. Really. Buy a DVD player if you must.
Well, I thougt it was creative, interesting, and appealing. I quite enjoyed playing “name that tune” along with the movie. And although both numbers come late in the movie after the rules of the game have been established, people have still been known to literally gasp in surprise when they first recognize “Like a Virgin” or “Roxanne”. IMHO, any movie that could make “Roxanne” (a song I have never liked) into an, again IMHO, completely engrossing musical number is doing something right.
I really do not see how anyone could watch Moulin Rouge! and come away with the impression that the fimmakers were lazy or doing half-hearted work. I should think that even if you didn’t enjoy the film you could recognize that a lot of hard work, research, and talent went into its production.
Well, I groaned with disgust every time I recognised a song. It seemed like nothing so much as name-dropping to me.
I recognise that a lot of hard work went into the visuals and production (basically the technical aspects) of the movie. I found the story, dialogue, characters, and acting to be uninspired, lazy, dull, cliched, boring, boring, boring, and cringeworthy.
