Kentucky: Goldfinger
Arkansas might could have been Sling Blade intstead of True Grit. The girl in True Grit was from Dardanelle in Yell County (as am I), but of course, the movie shows it as having some snow-capped peaks in the background, instead of the flat-topped Mt. Nebo, and Kim Darby as Mattie Ross doesn’t even feign a southern accent. Also, the story moves from there pretty early on.
It seems like the guy just picked his favorite movies instead of movies that would represent the state well.
Agreed. If Kansas can get “The Wizard of Oz,” why can’t Georgia get “Gone With the Wind?” And while we’re at it, let’s give Texas a break and give it “Giant!”
I was tempted to nominate Stuck on You for MA, as it takes place on Martha’s Vineyard, but was really shot in Rockport. But that’s just the first few scenes. Most of it takes place in California.
And how do you chose a movie for California? The Presidio, The Conversation, Milk, Chinatown, Dirty Harry, Towering Inferno – they’re ALL about the great state of California.
I like the idea of movies set in states but OBVIOUSLY filmed elsewhere.
New York: Rumble in the Bronx
Kentucky
“Coal Miner’s Daughter”
Louisiana
“The Princess and the Frog” - We need a kid’s movie
Maryland
For Maryland, and Maryland only, a TV show: “The Wire”
Massachusetts
“Gone Baby Gone”
New Jersey
“Clerks”
New York
“The Godfather”
Ohio
It’s hard to argue with “A Christmas Story”
Oklahoma
“Oklahoma!” Come on.
I got the Delaware/Wayne’s World joke right away when I first saw this. Yep, Delaware, you’re stuck with that, no matter what you say.
Anyhow, I’d rather have The Straight Story be Wisconsin’s movie than American Movie, but that’s not such a bad choice.
Nope. Diner
Yes, Giant certainly came to mind. The two most accurate depictions of the state to me are first Hud and second The Last Picture Show. I’d vote Hud but, dated, I’m not sure how period the map’s supossed to be. At least they didn’t give it The Alamo like they gave Hawaii Tora! Tora! Tora!.
Tennessee: Inherit the Wind, Nashville or Walk the Line
I was thinking that’s not good enough. I googled “movies about delaware.” All I got was movie theatre locations.
Wayne’s World it is.
12 Monkeys has some scenes in Delaware.
NJ movie should be either Eddie and the Cruisers or Buckaroo Banzai.
How about The Big Chill for South Carolina?
How about Atlantic City?
Hmm…good call, but no love for John Waters?
There have been a number of movies filmed in Delaware - Addicted to Love, Beloved, Clean and Sober, Dead Poets Society, Failure to Launch, Signs, The Village, Violets Are Blue - but not set in Delaware.
Kansas:
“In Cold Blood”
“The Day After”
“Superman” (didn’t the Kents live in Kansas?)
Anything but “The Wizard of Oz”… I’m so sick of that cliche.
Robocop!!!
Awesome!
