Movie Question For The Ladies

Which movies do you think have the best social commentary on women, as well as a good/great movie?

If you have time, it would be really cool to name a a movie older than 40 years, and something modern… I’m sure we have members from all over the world, and foreign movies would be icing on the cake, because I think one can learn a little about the country itself, what they value, how they think they talk, as well as documenting the change in film-making.

Okay, it’s a little silly, but I’m going to offer up 9 to 5. The hijinks about kidnapping the boss are over the top but the movie is highly entertaining.

However, the office’s paranoid atmosphere and
the frustrations that the women working there have are absolutely realistic and well portrayed.

When Jane Fonda has a problem with the copier leading to a rain of paper, it’s some old fashioned slapstick, and as such could easily be dismissed as fluff. But the boss comes in and chews her out, and after he leaves, Jane starts cleaning up, while quietly wiping away tears. Very relatable and true to life.

If you’re interested in a male’s opinion, I think Mildred Pierce (1945) was ahead of its time in showing the problems of a single mother building a successful business while dealing with a faithless lover and a spoiled child.

Thank you. I can understand, even as a guy. An accumulation of problems takes its toll.

I saw it, and liked it very much – until the hijinks going over the top. It went from social commentary to a kidnapping real quickly!

I kind of like ‘Born Yesterday’ - Judy Holliday, an ornamental bimbo, mistress to an equally gauche, corrupt gangster, is being instructed by William Holden in manners, to be more educated and less ‘low class’. She blossoms under his attention, takes the makeover seriously, and of course they fall in love. (The gangster is show to be a thug involved in legal chicanery, using her for his own nefarious purposes.). I like the thought that such a woman can better herself and break away from her situation. Her eyes are opened to the wider world and she sees her gangster for the scumbag he is.
