A mighty Wind!
Oh yes, and it’s one of only three films to win the top five Oscars. Best Picture, Best Actress, Best Actor, Best Director, and Best Produces. One of the others was Silence of the Lambs, not exactly a comedy!![]()
Forgot to add, the third movies was One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.
Even further than you think. It was a remake of a German film from the 1930’s called Victor und Victoria. I’ve never seen it but would love to, if I could get it subtitled. I don’t speak German.
Victor/Victoria & S.O.B. would make a great Julie Andrews/Robert Preston double-feature.
Nitpick, but the fifth Oscar won by those three movies was Best Screenplay, not Best Producer.
I thought Down Periscope was funnier than hell. (But then, I was in the middle of a manic episode at the time.)
Thanks, guys! I have seen quite a few of these and I concur that they’re funny. But I’ve also seen some I’ve never heard of and will definitely check out.
OK then, how about some comedic double/triple features, by theme?
Submarines
Up Periscope!
Operation Petticoat
Long Races
The Great Race
Cannonball Run
It’s A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World
Drag
Some Like It Hot
Victor/Victoria
The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert
Monsters/Zombies
Tremors
Tremors 2
Zombieland
Some Like it Hot is still funny after 60 years
A few years ago, AFI did a bunch of lists of the top one hundred movies/stars/passions/etc. One of these lists was of the one hundred funniest movies. Some Like It Hot was number one. Number two was Tootsie, which I think is great.
I don’t think these have been mentioned yet:
Dr. Strangelove
A Fish Called Wanda
The Odd Couple (in honor of Neil Simon)
The Sunshine Boys (ditto)
Murder by Death (ditto ditto)
Galaxy Quest
My Cousin Vinny
The Producers (the original, not the remake)
The Lost Skeleton of Cadavra
Number two was Tootsie, which I think is great.
I love Tootsie, it’s one of my favourites, but it copped a lot of flak when it came out, I’m surprised that it got on the list at number 2. ![]()
I like many of the suggestions above. For clever & profane dialog comedy, I will also add Clerks and Clerks II to the list.
Now that you bring up Kevin Smith movies, I love Zach & Miri Make a Porno. Justin Long playing gay porn star Brandon St. Randy? Awesome!
High Anxiety and There’s Something About Mary.
I forgot Galaxy Quest! (hey, it has Justin Long, too)
Perfect for nerds and people who are annoyed by nerds. And anyone who likes Sci-Fi, and people who find most of it absurd.
Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver, Sam Rockwell, a possibly-stoned Tony Shaloub … and Alan Rickman in THE archetypal “taking oneself way too seriously” role.
If you want to dance or sing along - Momma Mia
Naked Gun
Airplane
Robin Hood, Men in Tights
" The Twelve Chairs ".
This is the first feature film made by Mel Brooks.
It was shot behind the Iron Curtain. It is breathtakingly hilarious and has Frank langella in his first film and Dom DeLuise as well as Mel Brooks.
One of my favorite films to get a lot of laughs out of.
Nitpick, but the fifth Oscar won by those three movies was Best Screenplay, not Best Producer.
Indeed, there is no category called Best Producer.
Whatever motion picture is awarded best picture of the year has the producers receiving the statuette.

Second. “The Producers” was first by 3 years.

The last line of Some LikE It Hot capped the whole picture. “Nobody’s perfect!” ya gotta see it in context, but the first time I saw that movie I about had a heart attack from laughing so hard, and then that last line.
