Creation Of The Humanoids, strange little talky movie that seems more like a play. I think the thing that has kept it remembered is the ending, which is annoying because a character breaks the fourth wall to hit us over the head with the oldest twist in sci fi:smack:
Tol’able David, a 20’s silent film that I’ve only seen because my great-grandfather was an extra in one of the scenes. (But according to IMDB, the movie audience in “The Tingler” is watching this movie, so a lot of people may have seen this indirectly)
Jack and the Witch, a delightfully bizarre Japanese animation. I was lucky enough to catch it on TV, but otherwise I think it’s hard to find.
Also, I saw a very bad animated sci-fi movie sometime in the late 80s. I don’t remember the name…I think I blocked it out of my memory. I hope not very many people saw that one.
About ten years ago I stumbled across a movie called “Thursday” on Cinemax or Starz or something. I thought it was great, and it had a pretty good cast – Thomas Jane, Aaron Eckhart, Paulina Porizkova nude, and Mickey Rourke as a bad cop. Funny, intelligent, and some nice plot twists.
I’ve never met anyone else who’s seen it, or even heard of it.
I saw this on TV. The opening theme has a song sung in an electronic voice.
Do you know who made this film?
The Second City comedy troupe – long before they had their nationally syndicated half hour TV show that brought them to prominence, or their later hour long show. None of the people we usually think of as “Second City” players (John Candy, WEygene LOevy, Andrea Mertin, etc.) were members at thatg time, and so aren’t in this movie
Maybe it was this, by the same folks who made Fantastic Planet:
(although I don’t think either of these was “crappy”
One film I’ve seen that no one else will own up to seeing is Tales from the Past, also known by other names, including Dr. Terror’s Gallery of Horrors (not to be confused with the infinitely better Dr. Terror’s House of Horrors). It stars John Carradine (who narrates) and Lon Chaney, Jr. in one of his last roles. It’s an anthology of five horror stories with “twist” engings, a la Tales from the Crypt or the ones in Creepy and Eerie magazine. But the stories are so clumsily told that the twists should be evident to anyone long before you get to the end. The film uses a lot of scenes from Roger Corman films like The Raven. Sadly, these are some of the best parts of the film. The picture is technically awful – muddy scenes and terrible sound. Carradine plays “Count Alucard”, a gag that’s been used a zillion times before (including by co-star Chaney, the first one to use it in “Son of Dracula”). The twist is — "Count Alucard is a vampire!.
A strange but not in a bad way film based on inuit mythology, whole thing was subtitled and did get a bit slow at parts but it was trying for authenticity. It seemed to be a low budget production.
Oh and the sex scene showed how uncomfortable it must have been in your no privacy hut.
Wow, it’s rare I get to a thread this late and my contribution hasn’t been said already.
I have two, the first I’m certain not many people have seen and it’s a riot. High Strung. It’s not available on DVD but it has been put on Youtube.
The second movie may not be so rare in it’s native country but I don’t think it did so well in the US. I’m talking about Bliss. It was a very uneven movie but it had some very memorable parts and a super ending. I want to see it again but I can’t seem to find it anywhere.
from 1989, I think this was the movie that John Travolta supposedly met Kelly Preston while they were shooting it. I’d like to think I’m one of the only people on the planet who would have this movie in your “top 5, if you’re ever stranded on a desert island” flicks.
