Movie: The Red Violin: open spoilers

I saw this one last night and it was a real gem. Beautiful score and acting all around. The ending had me puzzled and IMDB doesn’t give a good answer.

It seems that Samuel Jackson swapped the Pope copy that he got from London for the real violin and took it home to his daughter. Question: Did they put the bullet hole on the handle in the copy?

Even if they did, when the old man, the collector dies (can’t be more than 10 years) isn’t the estate going to get the violin appraised and an expert will see that it is only 100 years old and not the 1681 Italian Renaissance piece?

Then who will be suspect numero uno? It seems like Sam Jackson’s character is looking at many years in the pokey very soon…
