Movies that they SHOULD remake

Hollywood loves to remake movies, but it’s a rare remake that’s ever as good as the original. And there are some movies that just shouldn’t be touched. I mean, what idiot decided to do a remake of The Flight of the Phoenix? The original starred James Stewart and Richard Attenborough; how the hell can you do better than that? And the previews of the new one show . . . motorcycles in the desert?:dubious: Doesn’t make me want to see it.

Anyway, the flip side of that is movies that cry out to be remade. Movies that had something going for them, but were less than perfect due to casting or ancient special effects technologies or something, and that really could end up a lot better if done today.

My nomination is Fantastic Voyage. Pontentially interesting, but really, Raquel Welch? Wooden Stephen Boyd? Donald Pleasence, a fine actor but wasted here? And the effects, while pretty good for their day, could be so much cooler with today’s technology. Hello? Anyone in Hollywood listening?

Other nominations?

Plan 9 From Outer Space.
Manos: The Hands of Fate

2001 could stand to be made more accessible.

The Hobbit. Or King Kong. Perhaps they could get Peter Jackson to do it.

Or at least an ending that doesn’t require lots of drugs to watch.

Already done. Innerspace, with Martin Short and Dennis Quaid.

I nominate Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones, and the forthcoming Revenge of the Sith. Absolute crap movies that should, by all rights, have been amazing.

Midnight in the Garden of Good & Evil. The book is great, charming, and while all the characters might not be likeable, they’re nothing if not interesting. The movie? Feh. They tried to make it into a mystery, and tie all the characters together into some conspiracy. I mean - hello? If the book is a best-seller, why do you think you need to change the story when you make the movie?

I never read the book–maybe that’s why I really enjoyed the movie.

Vaguely similar concept, but not a remake by any stretch. I’d like to see Fantastic Voyage remade as a serious (or at semi-serious) movie, sticking mostly to the original storyline: taking place mostly in the body, the crew facing various dangers, the trip through the heart, the antibody attack, the inner ear crisis, etc.

I’m in total agreement with you here, but then I think they’d need substantial reworking of the plot(s) to be decent.

Only if they ditch those lousy fake Southern accents.

…or at least have voice coaches so that Southern accents of the cast can at least be regionally accurate. There were a bunch of so-called Savannah accents that I swear sounded at lot more low country South Carolina or Appalachian than tidewater Georgia.

Dune
Starship Troopers

Peter Jackson, please do both

It’s time to remake some sci-fi/horror classics. Purists, beware.

Attack of The Killer Tomatoes
Santa Claus Versus The Martians
The Day The Earth Stood Stilli
Them
The Blob (Third time’s the charm, right?)
The Hills Have Eyes
