For me, I remember being surprised that “Top Gun” never had a sequel. Not that it was a great movie or anything, but it did do quite well at the box office.
Anyone else have a nomination for a movie where a sequel would have seemed an obvious thing for the studio to do, but never did?
Matinee, directed by Joe Dante. It wasn’t a huge hit, but it was low budget and it made money.
The sequel should have been Manthalf man, half ant, all terror. A “sequel” of the sort I describe was done for the movie The Carpetbaggers, it was called Nevada Smith.
Overboard. I know it was just a throwaway stupid little movie, but it was still cute at times. And it had lots of sequel potential since so much is up in the air when it ends. I mean, there she is, rich as anything, declaring her love for some guy who has never had money to spare. Furthermore, with Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell being partners, you’d think the project would be attractive to them.
Independence Day, made gazillions. Unfortunately, they killed off all the aliens, I’m still shocked they never left a sequel opening in that.
The TriStar movie with the monster they named “Godzilla”. They even left the sequel opening!
It was an on/off rumor with G-Fans over the years (most of us despised the movie). The movie wasn’t exactly spectacular and Devlin jumped ship, making a sequel all but gone. Meanwhile, Toho has made 3 Godzilla movies since then (incl Godzilla 2000) and a fourth is on the way.
The only sequel that movie deserves is one which starts with the baby iguana swimming in the East River, and then promptly getting swalloed by Toho’s Real McCoy.
They are probably still just in the “rumor” category, but in recent days I’ve heard that sequels to both “Starship Troopers” and “Independence Day” are in the works.
Personally, I shudder to think about either, but they are apparently in the idea stages with the original producers/directors of the originals involved. I wouldn’t give either film much of a chance of being decent.
I always thought the main charcters from The Rock would be good to see in a sequel. Especially with them on the run from the government with that valuable microfilm.
Tango & Cash was pure sequel material. It couldn’t have been any worse than Lethal Weapon 4. Or most of the flicks Stallone and Russell made after that.
