Movies with Arthropods

Quatermas and the pit. An old Hammer horror featuring three legged Martian arthropods. I think that counts.

Who Framed Roger Rabbit? I’m sure there must have been a bug in there somewhere, it had every other type of animal.

Y is for Yog – Monster from Space (1971 US Release) who is a parasite that mutates earth xreatures (including a crab) into giant freaks of their former selves.

Hey, I never said it was a good movie.

Did anyone mention Lobster Man from Mars, with Tony Curtis, yet?

This poor child is going to have a list of the most esoteric movies on earth.

Which I had seen this thread sooner:

Insect Fear Film Festival at U of Illinois. Here at Rutgers, we’ll be showing James and the Giant Peach this month and Wasp Woman next month. Maybe the grad students will have some leftover mealworm cookies (surprisingly tasty) from Ag Field Day instead of popcorn.

Z= A Zed and Two Noughts (1988). According to the VideoHound’s movie guide, this movie is about two zoologists who film “the decay of animal bodies absconded from the zoo.” It’s described as “heavily textured and experimental.” I haven’t seen this film, but that sounds like maggots to me.

Here’s a few of the toughies:

Q: “Queen Bee” (1955) starring Joan Crawford
W: “Where the Green Ants Dream” (1984) - a German film about Australian Aborigines directed by Werner Herzog.

Z: brachys’ “A Zed and Two Noughts” is a pretty good possiblity. I saw it, but it was a long time ago. I can’t be sure it had maggots in it, but as brachy says it almost certainly did.

However, as an alternative I can offer “Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars,” (1983), a concert film about David Bowie.

X, as in most alphabet quizzes, is going to be the killer. I have only found eight movies beginning with X, and none of them sound like great possibilities. The most likely are:

“Xanadu”: I fortunately have never seen it. Does Olivia Newton-John perhaps eat a shrimp at some point?

“X-The Man with X-Ray vision.”
“X the Unknown”

I can’t remember if Toad snapped up a fly or two during the film, but if he did, “X-Men” might fit the bill.

Here’s O: “October Moth” (1955)

Seems like the only one no one has made a suggestion for is V, and I’m still stumped on that one too.

barton, “X-Men” is an excellent suggestion. I seem to recall Toad catching a bug in the movie, but I am not 100% sure.

Another recent possibility is the “X-Files,” but as I have not seen it I don’t know if there are any arthropods in it.

IIRC, the X Files movie had a swarm of bees that were to be used as vectors to infect populations with (here my memory gets even fuzzier than usual) an antidote to the black cancer(?)

Or am I remembering an episode from the series?

The best way to get an “X” movie is to go to IMDB and get a list of all the movies that start with “X”. Then find one of those that has an Arthropod in it.

No, I’m not going to do it for you!

(kids today…grumble, grumble…)

The thought here is that the thread will end when each letter has a movie, yes?

Hey, I have one for V. In “Vampire’s Kiss,” Nicholas Cage eats a live cockroach.

That should do it, except it would be nice if someone could confirm that either X-Men or the X-Files actually has an insect scene in it.

Yeah, X-Files had bees.

I would just like to extend a warm “thank you” to all of you that helped me out on this project. I know I definetly couldn’t do it without you and was hesitant to even ask, but i am very glad i did! Thank you SO much!

My teacher will love my end result.
