Personally, I’m not ashamed to admit to liking something. But here’s a brief list of movies I like that people often roll their eyes in response to or scoff at when I mention them (several have already been named above, which means I believe I am in EXCELLENT company in this thread):
Summer School, with Mark Harmon and Kirstie Alley. Did I ever crush on Chainsaw. Krull: People who don’t like this don’t know what’s good for them. Really. Labyrinth: “You remind me of the babe.” Legend: I love the unicorns. Sideout: C. Thomas Howell plays beach volleyball. Lethal Weapon 2: “Diplomatic immunity.” “It’s just been revoked.” Up the Creek: Whoever mentioned this upthread is a total genius. About Last Night: Terrible adaptation of the Mamet play, but Jim Belushi is incredible as Bernie. Turner and Hooch: Slobbery dog, slender Tom Hanks in bikini underwear. The Golden Child: “We want the kniiiiiiiife.” House 2: Arye Gross! Big Momma’s House: I have an inexplicable soft spot for Martin Lawrence. Blue Streak: Martin Lawrence and Luke Wilson cop buddy movie. Journey to the Center of the Earth: Yep, the 1969 adaptation with Pat Boone and the crazy-ass duck running all over the place. Folks like to rag on the special effects, but I say the crystal cave and the mushroom cave are just awesome.
And I loved The Postman! A beautiful story about love and poetry in southern Italy. It’s especially poignant when you know the actor who played Mario died in real life…
Wait, that is “The Postman” you’re talking about, isn’t it??
I didn’t know that Fandango and Erik the Viking were guilty pleasures. I thought I was just the only person who’d ever seen them. Much like Sordid Lives and Bottle Rocket, once you get someone to watch them, they’re usually a hit.
Now the movie I can’t help but like though I probably shouldn’t is To Wong Fu, Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar.
OK, I’ll admit it, I actually liked the two new Star Wars movies
The acting, dialogue, and plotting are bad, but no worse than the original trilogy in my opinion. Really, were Harrison Ford, Mark Hammil and Carrie Fisher such great actors?
And compare the lightsaber battle at the end of The Phantom Menace with the one at the end of Return of the Jedi. C’mon, Darth Vader moved like friggin C3PO. Darth Maul was totally badass!
That said, I do hate Jar Jar with a passion and wish he would just go away.
My two favorite B-movies are Bring It On and Mortal Kombat. Interesting, Bring It On Again was a reasonable amount of fun, despite being direct-to-video, whereas Mortal Kombat: Annihilation is possibly the worst movie I’ve ever seen.
Some of the movies that have been mentioned in this thread I don’t consider guilty pleasures at all, particularly the brilliant Wayne’s World, which I could quote and discuss all day long.
One movie that I thought was fantastic but which almost no one else likes at all is Josie and the Pussycats.
Hey, c’mon, it taught us all how to load and fire the Bofors 40mm Mk I AA gun (in its secondary role as a direct-fire coast artillery gun. Could save your life one day.)
I await the deluxe DVD release, with all the restored scenes (which may actually make sense of the whole mishmash) in a month or so…
***Josie and the Pussycast * ** (that was a typo but I like it so I’ll leave it) started out a brilliant satire, but then it forgot it was a satire toward the end and just got sappy. Still, add it to my list.
Wow, seriously? I thought I was the only one this whole time. My friends always made fun of me for liking it. Perhaps we’ll have to have a Wayne’s World thread just for this purpose.
Revenge of the Nerds 1 and 3 High Spirits Dirty Dancing Grease 1 and 2 Willow The Three Amigos Clue Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure Bill and Ted’s Bogus Journey Wayne’s World 1 and 2 Lethal Weapon. All of them. I’ve never met a Lethal Weapon movie I didn’t like.
Oh, and just to get in on the in-touch-with-the-little-gay-man-inside-of-us-all action, I *own[/own] copies of Cabaret and Guys and Dolls. Right next to Zardoz (it was only $7.99!),Hedwig, and Run, Lola Run.
