Almost any Airplane, Airplane 2, Top Secret, The Naked Gun, etc…And don’t call me Shirley!
Why hasn’t anybody mentioned The Big Lebowski yet?
All the rest of my faves have already been covered.
Motorgirl, Silverado was a pretty decent western, no reason not to like/love it. (After all, it is one of the few times Costner actually managed to act in a film. )
And I forgot Holy Grail as well. Erg, not good…Ni!
Josey Wales… simply awesome movie …Clint rocked in that one.
I guess it’s because westerns are not very well respected in my group of friends. I’m used to defending Tombstone and Unforgiven to them but haven’t gotten around to sticking up for Silverado. I’ll start next weekend.

[li]Grease[/li][li]Fiddler on the Roof[/li][li]Aladdin[/li][li]The Rocky Horror Picture Show[/li][/ul]
what would my list be without RHPS?
Animal House
Young Frankenstein
Lonesome Dove, ok it’s a movie and a half
Liar Liar (Didn’t you? Didn’t you? LIAR!!!)
Ghost
The Wizard of Oz
About half of mine are chick flicks, for a change.
*The Graduate
Clerks
Pulp Fiction
Boogie Nights
Star Wars* and The Empire Strikes Back (but absolutely NOT Return of the Jedi … my brother and I owned the video as kids, and frankly, thirty times is a few too many.)
*The Shawshank Redemption
Shadowlands
Much Ado About Nothing* (the Kenneth Branagh version)
Pride and Prejudice (the A&E version w/Colin Firth … yum.)
Into the West (GREAT, highly underrated kids’ movie from Ireland)
Coooool! Someone else who loves this movie!
Here’s a few other picks:
[list]
[li]Babe[/li][li]The Princess Bride[/li][li]The Neverending Story[/li][li]The Wizard of Oz[/li][li]Citizen Kane[/li][li]It’s a Wonderful Life[/li][li]Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade[/li][li]Raiders of the Lost Ark[/li][]Plan 9 From Outer Space*
Wargames
A Christmas Story
Virtuosity
Gone With the Wind
While You Were Sleeping
Rocky Horror Picture Show
It’s a Wonderful Life
… and I have drawn a blank! Oh well, carry on…
Oh yeah…I left out Fargo!!!
Hey! Smoke a peace pipe, man!
I admit to watching Josey Wales, but am kind of embarrassed abot it. Sandra Locke is pretty awful in that movie.
Fretful, I agree with you on Into the West. Fine film. Of course, I like almost all films set in Ireland for some reason.
I, too, left ot Monty Python and the Holy Grail, as well as Life of Brian. (Odd, since like many of you, I am sure, I can recite most of the lines from both movies, in a really bad imitation of an English accent.)
Hmmm… I think most of mine have been covered, but…
Star Wars Trilogy
The Princess Bride
A Christmas Story
Men in Black
Lost in Space (hangs head in shame)
The Philadelphia Story
Ferris Bueller’s Day Off
Sleepless in Seattle
Steel Magnolias
Anything Disney
There are many movies that fit the bill for me, but I’m not going to mention any of them, in order to focus attention on this one particular film by the incomparable John Sayles:
PASSION FISH.
(the link leads to the Internet Movie Database entry for the movie.)
It stars Mary McDonnell and Alfre Woodard, with a supporting cast that includes Angela Bassett, David Strathairn (you either know who he is or I’m sorry for you), and Vondie Curtis Hall. I taped it off HBO and I watch it at least three or four times a year. YOU NEED TO SEE THIS MOVIE.
- A Christmas Story
- Grease
- The Shawshank Redemption
- Ferris Bueller’s Day Off
- Goonies
- Teen Witch
- Alice in Wonderland ('85 Version)
- The Neverending Story
- The Wizard of Oz
- The Boy Who Could Fly
Looks like my childhood made quite the impact.
ACK! I forgot E.T. and Karate Kid!
- Mommie Dearest
- The Christmas Story
- La Bamba
- The Princess Bride
- Goodfellows
- Forest Gump
- Mr. Bean
- Dumb and Dumber
- Willy Wonka and the chocolate factory
- Aladdin (disney cartoon - the first one)
Hmph. I just suck at this.
Willy Wonka should be on my list too.
Remember… Ride The Wild Surf… All of those bodies… I mean, all of those nice boards. Hey, Purplebear, I know that you remember…
Okay, the ones I’ve loved enough to buy on video and watch when life sucks: (in no order)
Young Frankenstein
Airplane
Casablanca
Animal House
Buckeroo Banzai
The Thing
Addams Family (all)
You can’t take it with you
The Wizard of Oz
Beetlejuice
Monty Python & The Holy Grail
The Haunting (original)
That’s more than 10 and still leaves out some…but it’s ::shudder:: indicative.
Veb
Good question. The answer is somewhat dependent on what shows up on the tube around here, but:
- Back to the Future (1st episode)
- Goodfellas
- The Great Escape
- Hamburger Hill (not a great movie but seems to be on the History channel all the time, plus I can’t resist anything with Phillip Glass’ music)
- Some Like It Hot
- The Wizard of Oz (like a magnet)
- Zulu
- Toy Story (I)
- Dr. Strangelove
- The Magnificent Seven
Check out ‘Zulu’ if you’ve never seen it. A young Michael Caine, a thrilling score, a “true” story, make for a movie classic - an often overlooked, almost lost, classic.
