Movies You Have Seen 10 Times (And Would Gladly See Again)

At the absolute top of the list is The Big Lebowski. I’m pretty sure it gets funnier every time I watch it. Also, pretty much any other Coen bros. movie, and:

Ghostbusters
Alien or Aliens (I can’t sit all the way through 3 or 4)
The Holy Trilogy
The Blues Brothers
Conan the Barbarian (not The Destroyer)
Superman 1 or 2
Braveheart
Raiders or Lost Crusade, but not Temple of Doom

…there are others, but that’s all I can think of at the moment. Man, that list ain’t gonna impress any film students, is it?

Apocalypse Now

Everytime I see it, I pick up something else. I could also easily see again:

Das Boot
Casablanca
Full Metal Jacket
Pvt. Ryan

Hmmm…, a lot of war, a lot of Heart of Darkness

Oh well, I’m a guy.

Some of the ones that have been mentioned, I’ll watch if it’s before my favorite part, if not, I’ll skip it.

The Great Escape
The Dirty Dozen

There aren’t many movies I’ve seen that many times; a few of the ones I have I’m sort of burnt out on (Ed Wood’s entire oeuvre, for instance).

The movie I’ve probably seen more times than any other, and that I still will watch when I come across it on the tube or pop into the VCR every couple of years is Local Hero. It took about six or seven times before I felt like I had noticed every subtle joke or sight gag. I’m probably up to 15 or 16 viewings by now, not counting times that I’ve caught a few minutes on TV, and I still enjoy it every time. Partly it’s a function of memories associated with when and where and with whom I first saw it (Somerville Theatre, Somerville, MA, summer of 1985 – saw it three times in about a week) but mainly it’s just that there’s something about Bill Forsyth’s sensibility that strikes a chord with me, even more so in Local Hero than his other films (though Housekeeping is a favorite of mine as well).

Others include the first few movies in the Thin Man series, Sullivan’s Travels, His Girl Friday,It Happened One Night, Double Indemnity, Duck Soup, The Cocoanuts (an unfashionable choice, I know, but there are reasons), Some Like It Hot, Touch of Evil, Dr. Strangelove, Robocop, The Princess Bride, Much Ado about Nothing (though I walk out during Michael Keaton’s scenes), Bull Durham, and A League of Their Own.

It would be hard to have a SDMB film festival that everyone could agree on . . . Films I have on tape and watch over and over again:

Now, Voyager and/or Brief Encounter (great tear-jerkers)
Intolerance
Marlene: A Film
Three-Cornered Moon and/or Million Dollar Legs (great screwball comedies)
42nd Street and/or Gold Diggers of 1933
Dinner at Eight
Airplane!
Broadway Melody
The Man in the Silk Hat (Max Linder documentary)

This Is Spinal Tap (definitely no. 1)
Animal House
The Blues Brothers
Vacation
Slap Shot (Paul Newman in vinyl is priceless)

And the embarrassing ones:
Sixteen Candles
Valley Girl
The Parent Trap (the original)

Some of my faves :

Dangerous Liaisons
Moonstruck
Some like it hot
7-year itch
Casablanca
Muriel’s Wedding
The Full Monty
Truly Madly Deeply
From here to Eternity
This is Spinal Tap
The Ruttles (sp?)
Pride of Prejudice (A & E version and Laurence Olivier version)
Star Wars trilogy
Shirley Valentine
Most of Monty Python’s stuff
Vertigo
Rear Window

I’m sure I’m forgetting a few movies.
