I am a closet fan of the original Red Dawn. I know it’s an NRA/survivalist’s wet dream, but there is something about the movie (maybe it’s just the memory of what I felt watching it back in the eighties) that I can’t shake. For it’s time, it had some revolutionary concepts like when one of the sisters stands up to the guys, refuses to do their washing, and both young women take part in the combat. I do strangely find it enjoyable to watch the scene in which the handgun is pried out of the cold, dead fingers of the guy who had just that bumper sticker also. Far for being a pro-gun endorsement, I have always taken that scene as a damn good example of why just having an armed population wouldn’t be enough to actually repel an invasion.
Dude, I thought I was the only one! I don’t know anybody else who even remembers this film. ![]()
I’ll second the person who said Conan, but I’ll go one better and say I like all the Conan films. Yes, even unto and including Red Sonja. That’s right, I said it. So what? Wanna fight about it?
There are so many movies in this thread I’d like the second and third etc. (HH, 5th Element and so on), but I’m too lazy right now so I’ll mention a few no one else has. Yet.
**Captain Ron
Ladyhawke
The Last Dragonslayer
Excalibur **(if only for Capt. Picard kicking ass in plate armor!)
I also love Better off Dead but that is clearly not a bad movie ![]()
Troll 2
Maniac 1934
Showgirls
All bad but so fun to watch.
Disney’s Camp Rock movies
Land of the Lost w/Will Ferrell
Idiocracy
n/m
EXCALIBUR is bad???
Why? How?
These are both great movies! Shame on you for mentioning them in this thread. ![]()
I gotta go with Independence Day, just because it’s on more often and I’ve wasted more time on it than any of these others.
Honorable Mention to the Wicker Man remake, a hilarious film that I could watch every day, but some overly sensible person seems to have buried it. I haven’t seen it in years.
Sorry - I just can’t let that stand.
The bad redneck accent call is spot on, but the correct quote is:
“Put the bunny back in the box.”
We now return you to your regularly scheduled thread.
Batman & Robin. I generally prefer a darker, more serious treatment of Batman, but this is by far my favorite of the pre-Nolan films - it’s such an over-the-top fluorescent campfest I just gotta love it. Uma Thurman’s performance as Poison Ivy is delicious, and I love any version of Batgirl. I have it on DVD and never get tired of it!
I agree with so many movies mentioned.
I have always had a real love for “Buckaroo Banzai”, “Flash Gordon” & “Big Trouble in Little China”. Those movies just are what they are: they are supposed to be absurd and somewhat campy. In fact, I find the woodland scene in “Flash Gordon” (and the toothy monster in “Big Trouble”) to be a little off-putting; I find them to be a bit too realistic to fit the rest of the film.
As far a Krull goes, it IS pretty awful , yet seems to take itself seriously. But still, I LOVE the flight of the fire horses…
I haven’t seen it mentioned yet, but I really like “The Last Starfighter”. Just watched it with my son- it was pretty bad (and stupid), but I like it.
I’m sorry, it’s not clear - you aren’t implying that Better Off Dead is a bad movie, are you? No, that can’t possibly be right.
The first movie that came to my mind is one I have watched more times than I care to admit: The Cutting Edge. It’s a romantic comedy about a former hockey player who learns to figure skate with a stuck-up snobby girl. Naturally, they hate each other.
It’s dumb. It’s predictable as all hell. I don’t even like romantic comedies. But I love this movie.
And then there’s Police Academy, which I have watched so many times I have dreams about it. My only excuse is that I had a young and impressionable mind, and thought Eugene Tackleberry was cute.
Ladyhawke. Came here to say this.
Dubious writing. Confusing plot in places. Borderline-obnoxious music (which i concede even as a raving Alan Parsons Project/Andrew Powell fanatic). Some good actors and some good acting, but a bit of scenery noshing as well.
But it’s a favorite for entirely relationship reasons.
You know, it’s funny–I remember loving Ladyhawke when it was new. Haven’t seen it for many years, but I used to get annoyed at all the people who complained about the music. I too am an Alan Parsons fanatic. I have pretty much everything the guy ever did, including some pretty valuable rarities. I’ve met the man on several occasions. How can these people ever hate his music?
And then just recently I listened to the Ladyhawke soundtrack again. For the first time since the movie was around.
Um…oh.
I see.
The music, in and of itself, is fine. It would make a perfectly serviceable and pleasant soundtrack for an '80s video game.
But for a medieval movie? Um…yeah. No.
I concede. The Internet is right, and I’m wrong. ![]()
My nomination:
Drumline. Just for the ending Battle of the Drumlines.
Mating Habits of the Earthbound Human (Carmen Electra is in it, and its one of the funniest damn movies ever… and no its not XXX)
Stardust (If you haven’t seen and are a De Nero fan, brace yourself)
Paint Your Wagon (Clint Eastwood Sings!)
Miracle (actually nearly all these Disney redo’s of Real Life Sports Stories)
A Boy and His Dog (Young Don Johnson in post Apocalyptic world with telepathic dog…grim, funny)
Oh Heavenly Dog (Yeah I dunno why I got to watch this once every few years)
Tapeheads (Tim Robbins and John Cusack before they were famous)
The Hudsucker Proxy (more Tim Robbins but Paul Newman steals the show)
The Blue Max (World War I flying machines!)
The Commitments (best soundtrack ever)
The Englishman that Went Up a Hill and Came Down a Mountain (Welsh people are Funny during the war)
The Dish (Australian people are Funny during the Moon Landing)
Waking Ned Devine (Old Irish people are Funny during a lottery)
29th Street (speaking of lottery, Danny Aiello steals the show in this one)
I found these movies to be unambitious yet quite amusing. There was nothing particularly intelligent or original about them but for some reason they just hit my funny bone at the right frequency.
I feel the same way about the TV show The Big Bang Theory. Almost every episode uses the formula of cliche sex joke, followed by cliche nerd joke, followed by Sheldon is insane joke, then repeat in varying order. But some how more often than not it manages to make me laugh.
I fucking love Con Air, but mostly in a “so bad it’s good” way.
It loses a lot of steam after - I’ll spoiler it for those who haven’t yet experienced the joy of watching it - a certain event*, but is still quite good.
-
After the French foreign exchange student reveals she speaks English, IMO it loses a lot of its quirky/dark charm and becomes a much more straightforward 80s teen comedy of a “Revenge of the Nerds” variety.
Since I like cheese in my sci-fi, Wing Commander.
Flesh + Blood, starring Rutger Hauer and Jennifer Jason Leigh
The Blood of Heroes* (aka Salute of the Jugger)*, also starring Rutger Hauer and Joan Chen
Pretty much anything with Rutger Hauer, for that matter.
For Love or Money, starring Michael J. Fox
and finally, even though it has a 60% RT rating, 300. You cannot watch that and say that it is objectively any good, it leaves me screaming. Every time I watch it. On the DVD I bought.
Every.
Single.
Time.
