The LOTR series. They’re awesome, but they’re just waaaaaay too long for me. I get fidgety and moody if I have to watch a movie for more than 2 hours.
Return of the Jedi
It was the first Star Wars movie that didn’t improve with each viewing.
Yeah, some movies I just really get involved with, love them, can appreciate the art behind them, but they have left me so creeped out that I do not want to subject myself to that ride again.
Blue Velvet
Barton Fink
Naked Lunch
Jacob’s Ladder really creeped me out. I enjoyed it, but I won’t watch it again. Too much of a trip.
For me it’s Pay it Forward.
I’ll never watch Pay It Forward again either, but not because I loved it…
As for movies I loved, I could probably continue to live happily without viewing Requiem for a Dream and American History X.
American Beauty and American History X are both off limits to me, for entirely different but obvious (I’d imagine) reasons.
Legends of the Fall.
Mourning my Dad once was enough.
Damn, I thought a movie with horses & cowboys would be safe…
To End All Wars
The Pianist
Requiem for a Dream
Most depressing movies that you’re “supposed” to see, but are difficult to watch.
Schindler’s List and The Pianist. These are not movies to enjoy, but to endure. And I mean that in a good way.
The Exorcist. The only movie I’ve ever seen that really scared me. Haven’t sat through it again but just thinking about it scares me. (Why yes, I was raised Catholic. How did you know?)
Citizen Kane. I was conscious of how much of a breakthrough it was and able to appreciate a lot of its virtues, but I just found it boring.
Oh, God, yes. Wonderful film. But never again.
Affliction. Great performance by Nick Nolte, and James Coburn finally won a well-deserved Oscar. But it’s just too painful.
2001: A Space Odyssey. Or, as I like to call it, “the most boring movie I’ve ever liked”. Excellent movie, brilliantly crafted, masterfully executed, and yet excruciating to watch at length. If you haven’t seen it, I highly recommend that you do. If you have seen it, I highly recommend that you avoid doing so again, except in cases of severe insomnia.
I’d like to third Boys Don’t Cry and add Mystic River. The ending just got to me too much and left me depressed for days afterwards.
Memento.
An emphatic second to Dancer in the Dark.
Pi.
- Breaking the Waves
- In the Company of Men
…OK, shortcut time. Anything by Lars von Trier or Neil LaBute. In theory, Todd Solondz and Harmony Korine could also be on this list, but I don’t love their movies.
I wouldn’t mind getting the DVD so I could see it in regular time instead of the start-at-the-end-and-work-backwards style it uses.
Grave of the Fireflies seems to be the most consistently quoted answer to questions like this. The one movie that you will get a near unanimous answer of “great movie, never want to see it again” from people when asked if they’ve seen it.
I’m a cronic re-watcher and there aren’t many movies I liked that I wouldn’t watch again. Hell, I even rewatch some movies that I don’t particularly care for sometimes.
I guess I’d have to go with Equus. I haven’t seen the movie but I saw the play. Really well done. I’ve actually tried to watch the movie version since and just can’t do it.
Schindler’s List. I sobbed uncontrollably for 3 hours after that film. If I watch it again I will surely have a nervous breakdown.
The Grifters.
I don’t think I could take the orange scene again. But what performances!
